Clinton News Record, 2016-09-14, Page 88 News Record • Wednesday, September 14, 2016 Potential dog park for Auburn Justine Alkema Clinton News Record One resident and dog owner in Auburn is looking to make the village a more dog friendly space; Jacqui Empson-Laporte wants to start a dog park for Auburn's canines. Empson-Laporte has lived in Auburn for eight years and is the proud owner of a lab -mastiff and lab -border collie. She says there are at least 45-50 other dogs in the village as well, and there are no public, completely fenced in places for all these dogs to run. "I live on a pretty busy cor- ner, and whenever I see peo- ple walking with a dog, I go and tell them what I'm trying to do; people are like yeah, that's a great idea," said Empson-Laporte. She is looking at two loca- tions, both in the park on the south east corner of town by the community hall and baseball diamond. The first location is directly behind left field; it would use the fence that is already there as one side of the dog park fence. The other spot is beside that diagonal to the diamond. There is playground equipment at the park as well. Right now, people tie up their dogs while their children use the playground equipment. This way, people can instead have their dogs in the park. Empson-Laporte approached Central Huron council with the idea at their meeting on September 6. She said that she was hoping to pay for the materials if they were willing to pay for the labour to install the park. They generally responded positively to the idea, but said they would want to share the costs with Ash- field-Colborne-Wawanosh and North Huron as Auburn is by all three municipalities. Empson-Laporte is prepared to talk with these other municipalities soon. Central Huron council also said they will first need a report from Roads Man- ager Tom Sinclair. Councillor Westerhout asked about the noise, which Empson- Laporte said is a good ques- tion, though she is not sure it will create any more noise than the dogs in the village already do. There will be signs instructing that dogs must be neutered or spayed, though it won't be enforced. Also, part of the park will be fenced off for small dogs, and the other part will be fenced off for larger dogs. It will be clear that the park must be used at the owner's own risk. After approaching the Auburn Co-op for quotes, the estimated costs for the materials is around $3000. Already raised is $200 from the playground committee and $1500 in private dona- tions from members of the village, a sign that people from the community want this facility. To raise the rest, Empson- Laporte is throwing around a few ideas. One of these ideas is to "adopt a post" which is a chance to have the name of a pet past or present engraved on a post in the park "I had priced out a fence for my own property, but then I thought, wouldn't it Photo taken from gis.huroncounty.ca An aerial map of the location for the park. It will likely either be right behind left field (labelled "B") or diagonal to the field (labelled "A"). be nicer if this was a com- munity thing where other people could bring their dogs?" Empson-Laporte brought up that they are always trying to get people to come use the community facitlies, so this is adding another reason for people to come to the park Justine Alkema Clinton News Record Pine Lake Campground on Orchard Line hosted their second craft and bake sale on September 10.
