Clinton News Record, 2016-05-18, Page 66 News Record • Wednesday, May 18, 2016 Renowned journalist and historian Gwynne Dyer speaks at Central Huron S.S. Dyer spoke on May 11 based on his new book Don't Panic: ISIS, Terror and Today's Middle East Justine Alkema Clinton News Record Central Huron S.S. stu- dents gathered in the gym- nasium with some students from Goderich District Col- legiate Institute in the morn- ing of May 11 for a very spe- cial occasion - to listen to internationally renowned journalist and historian Gwynne Dyer. Dyer spoke at the school 10 years ago, so since the London, England based speaker was in Ontario again, he asked Central Huron if they'd like him to come by. Dyer, who was born in Newfoundland, was originally trained as a historian and has a Ph.D. in Military and Middle Eastern History from the University of London. For over 20 years, he has worked as a freelance journalist, columnist, broad- caster and lecturer on inter- national affairs. He has a col- umn that is published in over 175 papers in around 45 countries, and he has pub- lished several books. History teacher David Yates said he thought it was joke when he got a phone call by someone claiming to be Gwynne Dyer. Of course, it was actually him. "He called me and said he had two speaking topics that are based on current books he's doing," said Gwynne Dyer. Yates. "One was on terror- ism and the other was on the ecological crisis. The students [in my world issues class] voted and chose to hear about terror- ism by a narrow margin." In his lecture, he talked about the history of the Middle East and what has brought about terrorism coming from that region. He focused on how the media hypes terrorism and what the realistic impact of ISIS is to North America and the world, which in his opinion is not drastic. His other lecture is on the eco- logical crisis that, he believes, a much bigger threat to the world today.
