Huron Harp School
and Blyth Festival
Orchestra a special
treat showcasing
more than 30 harps
Music lovers were enter-
tained with a delightful
concert on April 16, when
the Huron Harp School
joined forces with the Blyth
Festival Orchestra to pre-
sent Celtic Concerto by
Laura Zaerr. Kingsbridge
Centre was the perfect
venue with light from the
beautiful stained glass win-
dows reflecting the evening
sun.
Huron Harp School, with
over 30 harps, filled the
stage as they performed
various Celtic, Latin, and
popular pieces. Two of the
senior students played
solos; Meghan Maguire
performed her own compo-
sition, Foretaste, and Amy
Good played a Scottish air
entitled Leaving Stoer, a
tribute to settlers being
forced to leave their home
in the highlands.
Maggie and Hannah
Burgsma treated the
crowd to a stunning
arrangement of several
hymn tunes. Huron Harp
School is continuing to
make its presence known
in Huron County, and all
of the students are a credit
to their teacher and direc-
tor, Sharon Johnston of
Goderich.
Blyth Festival Orchestra
took the stage next, with a
flute concerto by A. Mar-
cello. Flautist Jan Searle's
melodies filled the hall,
ably accompanied by the
strings. Their rendition of
Hebrides Overture brought
the sound of wind and
waves to mind. They com-
pleted their set with a lively
rendition of Pachelbel's
Canon, which transformed
into a traditional fiddle
tune.
The highlight of the even-
ing was Celtic Concerto,
when 28 harps, 2 flutes, vio-
lins, violas, cello and double
bass took the stage. This
piece is a wonderful amalga-
mation of Celtic melodies
structured in classical forms,
and it became a showcase
for the Celtic harp and the
amazing acoustics of the
Kingsbridge Centre. Of the 8
movements, the first and last
were performed by the entire
harp school and orchestra,
while the inner 6 movements
again featured senior stu-
dents Maggie and Hannah
Burgsma. The audience
showed their appreciation
with a standing ovation.
Huron Harp School is a
growing force in our
area. The group has
recently been nominated
for a Huron Cultural Award
in the Cultural Event or
Organization category, cel-
ebrating a 10 year anniver-
sary for the Huron Harp
School.
Boasting 12 to 20 harpers
of all ages and abilities, the
Huron Harp School is a
growing ensemble based in
Goderich, under the direc-
tion of local musician Sha-
ron Johnston. It consists of
students from all areas of
Huron County and beyond;
ages range from seven year-
olds to seniors. The group's
mandate is that music is
accessible to all, as every-
one plays together, at their
own level. Huron Harp
School members can be
found performing at wed-
dings, churches, special
events, and other random
and unexpected loca-
tions. For more informa-
tion please contact Sharon
Johnston at 519-524-1865.
