The Yellow Fish Road
Program is a pollution pre-
vention program which
involves painting yellow
fish on the storm drains of a
town in order to remind its
residents that anything
which goes down the drain
goes directly into the local
water supply.
"It gives people a reminder
that storm drains are not there
to dump toxic chemicals or
other unwanted items down
because there are fish directly
connected to the storm
drains," said Denise Iszczuk of
Ausable Bayfield Conserva-
tion, who presented the pro-
ject to Central Huron's council
on April 25.
Anyone who lives near a
storm drain which has a
yellow fish painted on it
will receive a pamphlet in
the shape of a yellow fish
with information about the
program on it. The pam-
phlet also includes infor-
mation about the safe dis-
posal of hazardous waste.
St. Anne's High School
initiated the project when
they applied for funding
from Learning for a Sus-
tainable Future. When they
received the funding, they

decided to use the money
towards the Yellow Fish
Program. This means that
students were the ones to
paint the fish, along with
the help of students from
St. Joseph's and Clinton
Public School. They hoped
to reach around 300 storm
drains.
The Yellow Fish Road Pro-
gram began in 1991 and was
started by Trout Unlimited
Canada. Since then, 120,000
volunteers in over 250 com-
munities have taken part in
the project. 1 million fish
pamphlets have been dis-
tributed in Canada.

They simply need funding
