89 year-old Clinton greenhouses are no more

Greenhouses which have
been in downtown Clinton
for 89 years were torn down
on Tuesday, July 12.
These 3 greenhouses were
set behind the Backyard
Flower Shop, formerly called
Cooke's Florist.
The business had been in
the Cooke family since 1927
until around 15 years ago.
There were a couple owners
after that, and then Tricia
Robinson took it over four
years ago.
The greenhouses were
quite obviously 89 years old
with their cedar posts and
glass covering.
"Greenhouse technology
has changed so much since
1927," said Robinson.
The houses were in disre-
pair. For a few years, Robinson
tried to repair the glass using
various techniques, however
it was getting dangerous and
heat was escaping.
The process of tearing
down the greenhouses
started at 8 a.m., and they
were done by 11 a.m. 94
year-old longtime owner
Bee Cooke was there to
watch. Although knocking
down the houses was hard
for her at first, she admitted
that it was for the best.
Building a new green-
house will be much more
efficient and accessible.
Firstly, instead of four
cramped greenhouses, there
will be one large green-
house. There will also only
be one pipe going down the
middle instead of pipes in
every greenhouse, which will
save space. It will be an aes-
thetic improvement as well.
The business received the
facade grant from council,
which covered $5000 of the
building cost.
They are wasting no time,
and construction for the new
greenhouse began on Mon-
day, July 18. It should only
take around three weeks to
build. After that, they will have
lots of work and planting to do
inside the greenhouse, and it
will officially reopen for their
Christmas open house on
November 18-20.
Until then, space is tight in
the shop, but they are mak-
ing it work. They sold many
of their outdoor plants,
though some are still out-
side, and the rest fill every
nook of the store.
"If you are looking for
something, please ask us; we
may know where it is or
where or where to find it,"
said Robinson.
