Sandy Plewis, who lives between
Clinton and Bayfield, has published
a fiction novel that takes place in a
fictional town in Huron County.
The book, called Broken Chain, just
came out and is available at Made
in Huron in Clinton and Fincher's
Bookstore in Goderich. It will also
be available on amazon.com in
September.
The book, which Plewis
described as a "psychic suspense;
follows a protagonist named Brody
Rivers. Rivers drives a grocery truck
from farm to farm in the county,
which Plewis remembers happen-
ing from when she was a kid. She
even used the real grocery route in
the book Although the main town
in the book is fictional, some real
towns are mentioned, including
Clinton and Goderich.
The first part of the book sum-
mary says that Brody Rivers has
several obstacles in his life includ-
ing that he's part Native in an unac-
cepting town, his father is in jail for
murder, and "he's inherited an eerie
and unwelcome psychic 'gift' from
his addled grandmother'.'
The book is about River's

relationship to the farmers he
meets on his routes, including
being haunted by a reoccurring
nightmare about a girl from one of
the farms.
The book takes the reader
through Rivers' young adult life as
he is 16 when the book starts and 23
when it ends.
"It's very plot driven," said Plewis.
"It's a real page turner"
One significant event in the book
is the blizzard which took place in
Huron County in 1971.
Plewis said she remembers being
at school during the storm, and she
couldn't get home to her house in
the country. She ended up staying
in town for five days with an aunt
who lived there. She wanted to
include the storm in the book
because people still talk about it
today.
Although this is Plewis's first
novel, she has quite a background
in writing. She has taught creative
writing for many years. She went to
Humber for writing, and over 40
years she has done countless
courses and workshops.
In the past, Plewis has written
mostly short stories, poetry and
some scripts. She actually wrote
Broken Chain 15 years ago, and left
it. However everyone she showed
the book to loved it.
"Finally I thought, this is crazy,
everyone loves this book," said
Plewis. "So I went back on it."
Since writing Broken Chain 15
years ago, Plewis has focused on
writing more literary work. She
describes this as being more char-
acter driven and less plot driven.
For this reason, future work from
Plewis will likely have a more liter-
aryfeel.
