This week's interview was with Councillor Alex Westerhout. Where did you grow up? When and why did you move to Huron County? I was born in the Clinton Public Hospital, so I haven't moved too far. I've always lived here except for four years when I went to the University of Guelph. I was raised on a farm and haven't moved more than half a kilometer away. When and how did your interest in municipal politics originate? I'd have to give my father the blame or the credit for that. He was always very interested in politics, mostly federal and pro- vincial. We always talked about politics, and he always insisted that we vote. He said it was our responsibility, and he always said if you don't vote, you can't complain. So that was always my philosophy. I thought I had something to offer, so I thought rather than complain, I'll run for office. So that was six years ago I ran for council. I'm in my second term. I thought I could make a difference, though it's been hard, since the province keeps downloading responsi- bilities without much cash to go with it. What's your favourite thing about the position? First I just like going to meet- ings and listening to different viewpoints and discussions on issues and then coming to a decision. There are some inter- esting viewpoints out there. I also meet a lot of different peo- ple I wouldn't have met if I weren't a councillor, and I find briftl;1011," if.,7.4,61,711/ 7etle 94ceite *ttce. 17e:i 25tordto cse 74ate thea Ametted! I also like listening to local rate payers to hopefully make a different or not. We try to make things hap- pen, whereas the higher you go up in government you get fur- ther and further from the deci- sion makers. Even if the response is "no'; we try to quickly respond to the rate payers. What's the most challenging thing about the position? One is lack of public partici- pation. I realize council can be kind of boring if you don't have all the info in front of you and aren't the one making deci- sions. [It's hard when] there are various open houses, strategic planning meetings, budget meetings and regular meetings that we don't have people come to. Generally we only see peo- ple if they have a beef or if they want something. A little more people out would be great though that's the way it is; we're all busy. Also sometimes what Photo taken from centralhuron.com Central Huron Councillor Alex Westerhout. appears to be an easy fix takes a lot longer than you think it should. Sometimes issues take a lot longer to resolve than I would like to see them resolved. Often questions come out that you don't have answers to, and that slows a decision down. I'm used to making decisions here on the farm, and you make it and you go. But it's different at this layer of government, and the higher up you go the longer it takes to reach any kind of decision and make it happen.
