Tim Hortons and Eastlink each spon-
sored several sessions of Free Public Skat-
ing at the Eastlink Arena in Clinton leading
up to Christmas and through to January 3.
Most of those who took advantage of the
sponsored ice time were younger skaters of
varying skill levels.
Ryan Jantzi proudly brought his two -
and -a -half -year-old Caleb to introduce him
to the joy of skating. They had attended
once during the prior year. This December
they had participated twice before Christ-
mas Day and again three times between
Christmas and NewYears.
Jen Burns brought her children and their
friends several times on and off through the
sponsored Free Skates. Burns relates "this
arena is the favourite home of my kids,
between hockey and skating. If there is ice,
they want to be here." She is quite happy
with this as she feels that it gives balance to
their lives and gets them active, rather than
spending their time with technology, gam-
ing or television. Having her children in
sports is important, as belonging to a team
teaches so much more than just the game.
They learn to function as part of a team,
make lasting friendships and develop
sportsmanship, all while having fun. Bums
commends the recreation department and
the public skating sponsors for giving the
local children the opportunity to enjoy the
holiday skating.
Andrea Longstaff and her family are
from Stratford, but are spending their New
Years in Seaforth. Longstaff brought her
daughter Lauren, along with Lauren's long-
time friend, Ellie Longstaff of Seaforth, to
the Eastlink Arena in Clinton to give them
some fun friend time during the holiday.
Lauren King (left) of Seaforth and Ellie
Longstaff (right) of Strafford have been
friends since they were in daycare. On
December 31 Andrea Longstaff brought the
girls to the Eastlink Arena in Clinton to take
advantage of the Free Skate.
Other families, such as the Stewart family
cousins, took the opportunity to spend
some quality fun time skating, as well.
Sandy Stewart of Clinton spent the time
that her grandchildren were on the ice chat-
ting with Trish Delange in the viewing area.
This was a chance for the two women who
do not often see each other to catch up on
each other's families. The socializing of the
spectators is an often -overlooked benefit of
programs of this type.
