EmployerOne
survey echoed
skills gap study
Results from the Four County
Labour Market Planning
Board's (FCLMPB) second
annual EmployerOne Survey
are in. Employers have identi-
fiedwork ethic, self-motivation,
teamwork and customer ser-
vice skills as the top competen-
cies lacking in today's workers
looking for employment.
Business response doubled
across the region taking the
opportunity to give insight into
general conditions of the local
labour market which includes
the counties of Bruce, Grey,
Huron and Perth. The goal of
the survey is to understand
their labour market challenges
in order for the FCLMPB to pro-
vide direction on activities and
initiatives that will minimize
labour issues.
The importance of soft skills,
which includes work ethic, self-
motivation and communica-
tion, is still an issue for employ-
ers trying to fill positions. While
hard to fill positions includes a
wide range of occupations,
some requiring post -secondary
education, these position also
include general labour.
"Employers and those seek-
ing
eeking employment need to
understand that employers
require soft skills, said Gemma
Mendez -Smith, Executive
Director of the FCLMPB. "The
absence of soft skills negatively
affects the quality of worker
regardless of the occupation:'
Local hiring activity in the
region reflects the well-being of
the community and residents
depend on the access to quality
jobs. Based on their 2015 hiring
experiences, employers indi-
cated jobs were created in the
following occupational areas:
customer service, factorywork,
machine operator, food prepa-
ration, personal support worker
and registered nurse.
"Hiring is a function of busi-
ness expansion, shifting skill
needs and a direct result of peo-
ple leaving their jobs... efforts to
keep the number of job leavers
to a minimum are critical as
there are costs associated with
this, particularly in a tight
labour market where it's more
difficult to find qualified work-
ers,"
orkers," said Mendez -Smith.
Additional information
gained from employers in the
2016 EmployerOne report
includes business investment
in training opportunities, as
well as hiring practices and
challenges.
The survey findings, which
will be shared with local stake-
holders, including educators,
local governments and
Employment Ontario Service
Providers, can be viewed at:
