Membership To
Mrs. Neil Bell
Unit Five of the UCW was in
charge of the Christmas meet-
ing on Monday in Northside
United Church. Mrs. Douglas
Whyte opened with a poem,
"Christmas Again." Hymn 55
Was sung and Mrs. Orville Oke
had a reading, "Let's Keep
Christmas." Miss Nancy Berger
favored with two piano solos,
which were enjoyed by all. Mrs.
D. Whyte read the Christmas
story from the Bible, and Mrs.
Eric McCue led in prayer. The
offering was received and dedi-
cated.
Mrs. R. McKercher and Mrs.
J. Bach presented life member-
ship certificate and pin to re-
tiring president, Mrs. Neil Bell.
Mrs. Bell made* a fitting thank
you. Hymn 47 and the Lord's
Prayer in unison closed the de-
votional part of the meeting.
The business part was opened
by Mrs. Neil Bell, secretary,

A Christmas tree aglow with
blue lights, lovely murals and
window decorations set a gay
atmosphere for the annual par-
ish bazaar and tea, held in St.
James' School and sponsored by
the Catholic Women's League.
Guests were welcomed by the
president, Mrs. James Dever-
eaux, and vice-president, Mrs.
Clarence Malone.
Gilded globes, artistically fa-
shioned from popcorn, red can-
dles and holly formed attractive
centres for the tea tables. Pour-
ing tea were Mrs. J. Holland,
Mrs. Josephine Morris, Mrs. J.
given. The Christmas boxes for
the shut-ins will be packed Dec.
18, at 1:30, in the church base-
ment.
Reports for the year were
given by conveners of each
committee, including one from
each unit, all of which were
adopted and seconded by Mrs.
L. Dale.
Mrs. Bell' thanked everyone
and expressed her pleasure in
working with the UCW.

Annual Achievement Night
4-H Receive Awards
The 16th annual 4-H Achieve-
ment night for the County of
Huron, held in Clinton Friday
night, brought to a close activi-
ties for 20 clubs, including the
largest 4-H Club ever organized
in Canada.
A 92 per cent completion by
325 members in 364 4-H projects
was reported by Don S. Pullen,
assistant Huron agricultural re-
presentative, who directed the
entire program this year with
the assistance of 45 club lead-
ers.
Kenneth Papple, of RR 5, Sea -
forth, won the Elston Cardiff
Citizenship Trophy as the coun-
ty's top all-round 4-H member.
He was selected' for the out-
standing contribution he made,
not only in 4-H activities, but in
home and community affairs.
Mr. Cardiff was not present,
"and D. H. Miles, Huron ag rep,
made the presentation.
Kenneth, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gordan Papple, of McKillop,
captured three other awards.
For obtaining the highest score
in the swine club, he won for
the second consecutive year the
Marvin Howe Trophy, and the
Canadian Imperial Bank of Com-
merce (Seaforth branch) wrist
watch. As all-round showman,
he earned the Toronto -Domin-
ion (Seaforth branch) bank
award.
The 20 -year-old SDHS student,
who is president of Seaforth
Junior Farmers, has completed
21 club projects. In November,
he was awarded a gold medal
at the Royal Winter Fair for
winning the beef cattle judging
event. He was a member of the
Huron County team which won
top spot in beef judging.
Biggest in Canada
The achievement night saw
70 members, including six girls,
from one club, the largest on
record in Canada, march onto
the pla':form at the Central Hu-
ron Secondary School, to re-
ceive prizes.
The Huron Swine Club was
sponsored by the Huron County
Hog Producers' Association in a
bid to promote top-quality pure-
bred swine.
The association purchased at
a cost of $4,500 a pair of gilts,
all from R.O.P. tested stock,
for each club member. Next
April, members will be requir-
ed to sell one of the gilts, with
the proceeds returning to the
association. The second animal
remains property of the mem-
ber.
The project, termed an over-
whelming success, increased
membership in the club to five
times that of last year - in a
county that is ,one of the larg-
est hog -producing areas in the
province.
Tom Riley, RR 1, Londesboro,
captured the association's swine
award, while Ross Fitch, RR 1,
Wroxeter, won the Ross Savauge
Trophy for his county champion
gilt.
Wins MacNaughton Award
For 19 -year-old Mrs. Wilma
(Dale) Scott, RR 1, Belgrave,
the night was a memorable one.
For achieving the highest score
in the county, 952 out of 1,000,
she won the C. S. MacNaughton
Trophy, donated by Ontario's
minister of highways, and the
Canadian -Imperial Bank of Com-
merce (Blyth -Auburn branches)
wrist watch for the highest
score in dairy calf club.
Mrs. Scott had completed
eight projects -all with Guern-
sey calves.
Mr. MacNaughton asked that
the trophy be presented by her
father, William J. Dale, RR 1,
Clinton, who was appointed ear-
lier last week -as a member of
the Ontario Guernsey Breeders'
Association,
On hand Or the presentation
was Murray Scott, her husband,
who last year was named the
county all-round member.
Mrs. Scott's younger sister,
Dianna Dale, was presented
with the A. Y. McLean Trophy
for dairy showmanship.
Huron County Warden Walter
J. Forbes, of Goderich Town-
ship, presented the Warden's
Novice Trophy to Neil Gowing,
RR 2, Brussels, whose score of
928 was the highest for a 'first-
year member. .
$2,369 in Cash Prizes
Other special awards went to
John Wightman, Belgrave, for
the highest score in beef calf
clubs; Keith Fisher, RR 4, Gode-
rich, highest score for a first-
year swine club member; Bar-
bara Watkins, .'of Londesboro,
champion beef showman; Paul
Eedy, RR 1, Dungannon, coun-
ty champion Hereford calf.
In all, $2.369 in cash prizes. a
record, was distributed along
with crests and other prizes.
Cliff Bray, RR 3, Brussels,
president of the Huron County
4-H Club Leaders Association,
was program chairman. John
Lavis, Clinton, chairman of the
Central Huron school board, ex-
tended a welcome.
Mrs. W: 0. Struthers, Mitchell,
was guest speaker, and the Hu-
ron County Junior Farmers

Greetings were brought from
the Ontario department of ag-
riculture by D. H. Miles; from
Huron County by Warden W. J.
Forbes, and from the provincial
government by Murray Gaunt.
