Shareholders of re- cord at the 'close of business on Friday, December 13, will re- ceive a dividend of 20e per share, an increase of 5c per share, to be paid on Tuesday, January 2, 1964. In April, 1963, a change in method of dividend payments from irregular to quarterly pay- ments was made by British Mortgage. This followed a 20 for 1 share split approved by the shareholders at the last annual meeting held in Decem- ber, 1962. Par value of BritiOh Mortgage shares now is $5.00 each. In commenting on the change, Wilfrid P. Gregory, Q.C., execu- tive vice-president and manag- ing director, said the increase is made possible by the growth of the business of the company and the resulting rise in net income. Founded in 1877, British Mortgage & Trust now has 10 branch offices in Ontario. Head office of the company is in Stratford. NEED RUBBER STAMPS? THE HURON EXPOSITOR PHONE 141 — . When will you get your ap- plication form? How long will your new lic- ence be valid? How much will you have to pay? . All these things depend on your birth -date. Transport Min- ister Irwin Haskett outlined the procedure in a preview of how the new system will work, If your birthday is in Janu- ary, you can expect to recei, e your form very soon. If it is in June, you'll get your form about New Year's; if it is in the final months of the year, you'll get your form later in January. The application forms are being mailed in the chron- ological order of the drivers' birthdays. Your licence will be valid for more than one year. The ex- piry date will be printed on it. If your birthday is between the 1st and the 19th, the expiry date will he ,on your birthday in 1965. If your birthday is from the 20th ,of the month on- ward, the expiry date will be on your birthday in 1966. And how much will it cost? "The annual licence fee re- mains the same, at $2.00 per year," Mr. Haskett said. "The amount will be calculated ac- cording to the length of time each licence is valid." For example: If your birth- date is June 12, your licence will be valid for about a year and a half—all of 1964 and up until June 12, 1965—and your fee will be $3.00. If your birth- date is November 22, your lic- ence will be valid for all of 1964 and 1965 and up until No- vember 22, 1966—and your fee will be $5.80. Why aren't the licences being sent out all at once? Simply because there are two and a half million of them. Even with machines printing and mailing the cards at the rate of nearly one every second, and operat- ing 24 hours a day, it will take two full months to get them out. If the cards for every driver could be laid end to end, they would form a continuous strip for 473 miles — from Toronto to well beyond Sault Ste. Marie. To get ready for the simple operation of printing your card and mailing it to you, the per- sonnel of the Department of Transport have been working full -tilt for nearly a year and a half. At the same time they have been looking after such details as changes in address. And with so many drivers involved, this is no small chore — change -of -ad- dress forms have been received in a volume as heavy as 3,000 IMPORTANCE OF MAKE-UP to FEMININE MORALE When cosmetics were declar- ed a luxury and prescribed by the government of World War II in England, women war work- ers developed noticeable and widespread feelings of resist- ance. When, as an experiment. lipstick was again provided for women defence workers, their output of work increased, and their whole general attitude changed for the better. USBORNE . Com- munity Centre, Hensall, with 270 in attendance. Guest speak- er, Bert Moggach, Seaforth, farm engineer, consultant with the Department of Agriculture, Clinton, gave an illustrated talk on thetractor and farm imple- ment maintenance. Alex MacGregor of Kippen spoke on "FAME", stating that 800 people in Huron County bought shares, but 'more will be needed, as four plants are to be started in the spring. Harvey Taylor, Varna, gave a short talk on CIA Insurance, pointing out the tremendous growth the company has made during its 15 years; it now stands in first place in the in- surance field. Elmer Ireland, president of Huron County Federation of Agriculture, reminded t h e members of the various prob- lems the federation is working with—The School Tax Levy, Dairy Industry, Egg Marketing Situation, etc. per day. What's the reason for the new system? "Sheer volume made it essen- tial to switch to a mechanized system of processing drivers' licences," Mr. Haskett said. "Once the transition to the new system has been made, with licences being renewed on birth - dates all through the year, we will be processing applications for drivers' licences at the rate of about 80,000 a month. This is much more efficient than handling all two and a half mil- lion licences in a two to three month period each year." "The three-year term of the licence will result in a measure of greater convenience for driv- ers, too. "The mechanized methods make it possible to keep more complete files, resulting in bet- ter control over suspended driv- ers, better facilities for research and other improvements in the interests of the safety of all drivers in the province." Mr. Haskett said the first step in conversion was to make out punch -cards for every driver, and this began in December of last year. It was probably the biggest changeover to date in Canada, and at one time there were 65 key-punch operators on the job. ni4.S =WPM.
