Returned b y acclamation were Thomas Leiper, reeve, and Councillors Hugh, Flynn, James McEwing, Clare Vincent and Donald Buchanan. Clerk Harry Tebbutt was named chairman of the rate- payers' meeting and read the financial statement and gave an explanation of the various it- ems in it. Road superintendent Leonard Caldwell reported on the work that had been done on the roads of the municipality, including the construction of two bridges. The bridges, he said, were not large bridges, but are rather large steel reinforced concrete culverts. The total amount of money budgeted for the roads NEW BRUNSWICK BEFORE IT CAME INTO EXISTENCE In the time of early French settlement, what is now New Brunswick formed a part of the colony of Acadia, The Bri- tish conquest did not bring New Brunswick into existence either. It then formed part of the col- ony of Nova Scotia, However, recognition of its separate iden- tity came in 1784, when New Brunswick was established as a province. Itis one of the four founding provinces of Confed- eration. Check Huron History Society Huron County Council, through Clerk -Treasurer John Berry, is investigating the steps necessary to start a Huron His- torical Society. This is in ac- cordance with a recommenda- tion by the property committee, in a report presented by Reeve Ivan Haskins of Howick. The committee acted upon a letter from the county Women's In• stitute, in which the subject was brought up at the recent rally in Goderich by Mrs. Wilfred Mack, provincial convener of historical research. Most counties in Western On- tario have historical societies, and some organizations are on a city basis. First activity of a new society, in a number of cas- es, such as Oxford, has been to start a museum, and this may have been responsible for lack of interest, up to the present, in organization of a society. Weeklies Aid in Tourist Exchange The weekly press co-operated in the first Ontario -Quebec con- ference on increasing the flow of tourists both ways over the Ontario -Quebec border. Meeting in Quebec City, the three-day conference sponsored by the Ontario Department of Travel and Publicity delved into a crowded agenda and came up with a number of suggestions that the ministers of both prov- inces will turn over to their de- partments for study. Tourism represents $600,000,- 000 a year to Ontario, the Hon. James A. C. Auld, Minister of Travel and Publicity, told the group of weekly and daily edi- tors, and representatives of national magazines, radio and television. This represents ten cents in every dollar of the pay envelope of Ontario citizens and means jobs for 300,000 people, five per cent of the province's popula- tion. Robert Prevost, Deputy Minis- ter of Tourism, Fish and Game for Quebec, said Ontario tour- ists were coming over the bor- der in tremendously increasing numbers, accounting for 583,- 000 cars of the 600,000 counted last summer entering Quebec at the 15 border points. The group combed tourist lit- erature from both provinces, and brought up suggestions for improving the invitation to the tourist. They discussed tourist accommodations, the potential of travel between the two prov- inces, recreational facilities. the "differences" which attract tour- ists to the two provinces. Mr. Auld told the meeting that some of Ontario's tourist booklets will be printed in French this year, and serious consideration is being gieen to a bi-lingual printing for the fol- lowing year. Upper Canada Vil- lage billboards in Quebec will be in French, he said. As well, he told the group, some hook- lets will be in other languages for New Canadians, Mr. Prevost said the Quebec government will shortly release a 30 -minute color film, "Land of Good Neig ors", in which Que- bec commune ' wiII be twin- ned with those f Ontario and other provinces. William H. Cranstoi Midland, Ont., chairman of the wrist Industry Committee, Depart. ment of Economics and Devel- opment, was chairman of the sessions held at the Chateau Frontenae. and bridges for 1963 was $65,- 000, of which• $49,397.17 has been spent so far this year. Assessor George Garter was asked to give a report on the assessment of the municipality Mr• Carter spoke at some length about a different form of as- sessing which would relieve or equalize the present form of assessment which is based on the ownership of property ra- ther than personal assessment. The different representatives of the high schools gave their reports: Robert Thompson for Clinton High School, Edward East for Goderich High School, and Oliver Anderson for Sea - forth High School. They answer- ed questions and indicated that school business is now big busi- ness. Reeve Thomas Leiper review- ed the work that had been done by the county, and expressed his thanks for an acclamation for 1964. Councillors Hugh Flynn, Clare Vincent, Donald Buchanan and James McEwing thanked the ratepayers for their acclama- tion and each spoke briefly on the affairs of the municipality. Among other things that the councillors brought to the at- tention of the .ratepayers was the practise of roadside dump- ing of rubbish. They pointed out that if people would stop the habit, it would do a great deal to make their own municipality quite a bit tidier. Glenn Webb, Reeve of Steph- en Township, was present as a visitor and was invited to make a few comments on muni- cipal affairs in general. Mr. Webb will be a candidate for the wardenship -o1 the county if be is returned as reeve in his municipality. Other prospective candidates for the wardenship are Ralph Jewell of Colborne Township, and Roy Adair of Wingham. ARE YOU PSYCHOKINETIC4 The success of the Parapsy- chology Laboratory at Duke University, in the U.S.A., in demonstrating the existence of psychokinesis—an ability that some people have to influence, by thought alone, the move- ment or behavior of an inani- mate object. This was achieved by nine years of research in dice -throwing tests. The subjects tried by will -power alone to make the cubes fall with a specified face turned up. Pre- cautions were observed to pre- vent any bias in the dice or to prevent the use of dice- thrbwing skill. The results, an- nounced in 1943, indicated that some persons d9 have this abil- ity, for their success was too great to be explained in any other way. The respiratory diseases are a group of sicknesses that have in common a relationship to the body's breathing processes. Little Boy: "Mummy, how long is it since Daddy died?"
