BRITISH MORTGAGE MOVES
TO OPEN ST. MARYS BRANCH
A branch office of British
Mortgage & Trust Company will
be opened in St. Marys, accord-
ing to an announcement by Wil-
frid P. Gregory, Q.C., executive
vice-president and managing
director.
One of the oldest business
properties, the White & May
Department Store, situated on
the northwest corner of Queen
and Wellingston Streets, ' has
been purchased. The building
will be demolished and a mo-
dern, new office, suitable for
the Company's purposes, will
be erected on the site. British
Mortgage will take over the
property at the end of'Septem-
ber. It is expected that tem-
porary quarters will be used un-
til the new building is com-
pleted.
The site of the White & May
building was originally occu-
pied by one of the early pioneer
hotels. Almost 100 years ago,
on October 2, 1862, a depart-
ment store was opened by the
late G. B.- Smith. In 1880 Mr.
William May entered the busi-
ness and the firm of White &
May was founded in 1910.
A full range •of trust and fi-
nancial services will beered,
by the St. Marys branch office.
"The opening of the St.
Marys branch" is part of our
expansion program," Mr. Gre-
gory said. "More and more peo-
ple are seeking the trust and
financial services our Company
can provide. We can supply
that need in St. Marys and in
addition give better service to
-our customers in that area.
"We are pleased to be part
of a community that has such
a proud history as St. Marys.
Since the day when the first
settler stopped in' Little Falls,
the town has been widely re-
cognized for its sound economy.
The St. Marys Cement Company,
established in 1910 by the late
John Lind, has been the back-
bone of the town's industry.
Maxwell Limited, founded in
1895,• and C. Richardson Com-
pany Limited have contributed
greatly to the development of
the town. Some of the first
mink ranches in Ontario were
those of D. R. Stevens and Cal-
vin Martin, situated just north.
of St. Marys. More recently the
well-known and highly respect-
ed firm of Hinde & Dauch has
opened a fine new plant which
employes over 100 workers.
These industries, together with
the surrounding fine farming
community, makes St. Marys a
logical choice for a lofation for
a branch office of our Com-
pany."
