advice from
Doris Clark
Hurt 13y YIN Sitters
DEAR DORIS — Our oldest
boy, age seven, takes no inter-
est, in anything and says every-
thing is stupid. He doesn't get
along with his younger brother
or the other children. He also
likes to baby talk once in a
While.
When he was younger I used
to work and have a babysitter.
Some would strap him and
leave him alone a lot.
He is really not a bad boy.
It's just this stubbornness. When
I ask him to do something he
simply ignores me. He cries
easily and is easily hurt. The
teacher says he doesn't want to
get ahead in school work.
Baffled Mother
DEAR BAFFLED—Something
has discouraged him from even
trying to meet ordinary chal-
lenges—and I'd' suspect the in-
adequate babysitters. Early ex-
periences, though not remem-
bered by little tots, leave last-
ing impressions.
Your boy learned early that
he had no one to count on; why
shouldn't he ignore you now?
It will take a while to wits back
his trust—and his faith in life.
Praise, encouragements, re-
wards; these are the ways to
do it. Don't ask for achieve-
ments which are beyond him;
and simply lavish love and af-
fection on him.
DEAR DORIS—In your col-
lumn you said some people
need to improve their voices. I
took your advice but I couldn't
find anybody who wanted to
train voices for speaking; only
for singing.
Now I am working on trying
to improve my voice with the
help of exercises and a tape
recorder. I feel I will make it.
,Country Cousin
DEAR COUSIN — Cheers !
Telephone companies have been
drilling operators in the proper
use of voice for a long time;
and tape recorders make , it pos-
sible for their girls to hear
what they sound like before
and after.
DEAR DORIS—I expect to 'be
married soon. Are the groom's
parents entitled to invite as
many people on their side as
they wish, even if that number
exceeds the count on our side?
If not, how do we convey .this
information without causing
hard feelings?
Bride -To -Be
DEAR BRIDE-TO-BE — Your
parents decide on the size of
your wedding. They also pay
for it. So you ask the groom
for a list of those he wishes
to invite, stating the number
you can accommodate from his
side of the family. Usually this
is about half.
No reason whatever for hard
feelings. 'This is simply the
way it is done.
TO PUZZLED HUSBAND—
Ask yourself: (1) Do I talk to
my wife and let her know what
I am thinking?., (2) Do I ever
tell her what a swell gal she
is? (3) Do I give Hier money
for her own use? (4) Do I visit
my in-laws cheerfully? (5) Do
I see that she gets a change,
regularly? (6) When I promise
to fix something, do I do it?
If you can say "yes" all along
the line, better give in and ask
her what's, wrong. You get no-
where by letting her bottle it
up, whatever it is.

TO OLD AGE PENSIONER—
Your fellow tenants can hardly
expect you to change the habits
of a lifetime just because they
sleep in. But if they are con-
stantly critical, how about mov-
ing? There are more friendly
people in ,the world. This is
something to talk over with
the counselor at your welfare
agency.

DEAR DORIS—Are potatoes
fattening? This is to settle an
argument.
Calorie Conscious
DEAR C. C.—Anything is fat-
tening. But potatoes without
trimings contain valuable
nourishment, and are not any
more fattening than a great
number of other dishes.
In a three -and -one-half ounce
portion, the number of calories
in potato chips are 568. In
French fries, 274. But plain,
baked in skin, 93. Boiled (no
butter) 76, and pared before
cooking, 65. Mashed potato,
milk added, 65.
The salesman was trying bard`
to close the sale. "A'Iadam," he
said, "you pay a small deposit,
and then you pay no more for
six months."
The prospective buyer paled.
"Who told you about us?"
