Highlight of the meeting was
an addres by guest speaker Ed.
Fallon, general manager of
AGWAY, a big American re-
gional co-operative.
Mr. Fallon, whose organiza-
tion did 338 million dollars of
business in the past year, told
the delegates that co-operatives
must work together to build
large-scale operations.
He said that by merging, the
co-operatives would be able to
grow, hire the best men avail-
able, and have access to larger
sources of capital.
Mr. Fallon's company has fol•
lowed his own advice. AGWAY
operates a chain of 60 grocery
supermarkets, livestock market-
ing facilities, fruit marketing
and processing plants, and a re-
finery in Texas. Oil and gas
from the refinery is transported
to the northeastern' states serv-
ed by AGWAY in tankers own-
ed by the company.
AGWAY also owns a control-
ling interest in Mohawk •Air-
lines, and has an interest in
a hardware supply firm.
Mr. Fallon pointed out that

ity in the past 20 years. Their
wages have remained at the
same levels while those in other
branches on the economy have
increased by three-quarters.
He said one of the most im-
portant reasons is that farmers
have not organized their power
to the extent that other groups
have.
He said the answer is to meet
size with size, strength with
strength.
In the UCO annual report,
which was released at the meet-
ing, it -was predicted that the
majority of the local member
co-operatives of UCO would
merge with the central organ-
ization within the next three
years.
In the first six months of the
merger program, 16 locals de-
cided to join the regional. Ac-
cording to UCO General Man-
ager Leonard Harman,, another
30 mergers are expected in
the present fiscal year and prob-
ably a further 30 in the next.
It is this strong interest on
the part of locals that has led
the UCO management to re-
vise its earlier estimate of 10
years for the merger process
to the three years now predict-
ed.
The report also showed an
increase to 104 million dollars
in the volume of UCO. In spite
of this increase of more than
11 million dollars, the com-
pany's earnings of $710,176.00
were only slightly ahead of
those of last year.
