Have a problem? Write to Canadian social worker
Doris Clark in care of this newspaper.
DEAR DORIS—My son and
his wife brought their baby girl
and stayed . a week with us.
On arrival, I was warned not
to touch the• baby, that -she did
not like to be mauled, was al-
lergic to cosmetics, and finally
1 was told .not to talk to her
in her playpen, as she was bet-
ter left alone. Yet they played
with her daily.
Neither my husband no
held this child once during er
stay with us.
WORRIED MOTHER
DEAR WORRIED—Comes a
time in the life of some newly-
weds when no one knows , a
thing but them.
Either that or this girl hates
to admit that her baby 'had
eczema (for which she feels re-
sponsible) and which may have
left the child with a sensitive
skin.
Babies need fondling. They
need to be handed from one to
another. They need new friend-
ships and an expanding social
world.
Unless you could talk to your
son about the needless estrange-
ment which seems to be crop-
ping pp, your place for a while
has to be on the sidelines. Give
your foolish young people a
chancy to mature.
DEAR'DORIS—I'm going with
a fellow who told me he used
to take fits. All the other girls
who Went with him left him
after he told them about this.
He still has to take pills twice
a day just to be cautious., •
How serious is this and could
it happen again any time?
Could the children be affected
by this if' there are any?
WANT THE 'FACTS
DEAR WANT ---People fear
the unknown. My medical con-
sultant advises a heart-to-heart
talk With yew*" friend if 'you
ogre about hien,
,Find' out the nature of his
lIness and what would be best
seizure. The disease may or
may not be inherited, depend-
ing onetfle individual type. -
DEAR DORIS—I am a desk
clerk in a motel. What is -the
right thing to say to guests
when they come in for a room?
"How are you?" or "It's a nice
day," or "How many are there
your party?" T was just won-
dering, if you had any sugges-
tions on how to meet people.
MOTEL CLERK
DEAR CLERK—"Good morn-
ing!" (or afternoon, or evening)
comes first. Then, "Can I help
you?" When he says' he would
like a room, put the question
about number in party. The
weather, the state of his health
and the news rank later than
these.
Guests often want to see the
rooms, so make this easy with
an invitation early. in the con-
versational skirmish.
DEAR- DORIS — My husband
is a •mail carrier. His fellow
workers make fun of him be-
cause he likes dogs. All 'of
them, seem to hate them and
claim they would kill any dog,
even if it did no harm to them.
They say he must be mental-
ly rattled because he's the only
one in their midst that loves
dogs.
Believe me, Doris, he's begin-
ning to think that those fellows
are right, and I say that they
are crude and don't respect his
likes and dislikes.
DOG LOVER
DEAR LOVER—Some people
hate the whole human race be-
cause someone sank their teeth
in them. And we call such peo-
ple paranoid. Dogs are also in-
dividuals. Through liking
"man's best friendA your mail-
earrying hushand 'has learned
