Hildebrand Paint & Paper
Mark First Anniversary
'Hildebrand's Paint & Paper
are marking the first annivers-
ary of the opening of their Sea -
forth store.
But as far as Barney Hilde-
brand, the senior partner of
the firm is eoncerned, it is a
fiftieth anniversary.
His long association with the
decorating business began in
Zurich, where he learned the
trade with the late Ferg Hess,
Jr., painting • buggy an cutter
boxes.
In • those days, each buggy or'
cutter_ received seven or eight.
coats of paint, and before a
new coat was added the pre-
vious coat had to be carefully
sanded. It was here he learn-
ed how paint should be applied
so that it gave the best protec-
tion, and tow to apply the dec-
orative stripes that were fea-
tures of the better buggies.
• In 1918 he moved to Seaforth
to begin an association with. the
Robert Bell Engine & Thresher
Co., which was to extend for
30 years. Her he found a
ready opportunity to use the
painting skills he had develop-
ed in Zurich, as he supervised
painting threshing machines,
steam engines and boilers pro-
duced by the Bell plant.
About the time he came to
Seaforth he began hanging
paper as a sideline.
"li,,don't know how many rolls
I have Worked, but it would be
a good many • thousand," he
said, and recalled how tastes
had changed in forty years.
"Today the papers aren't as
fancy. They are easier to hang
too, but the big difference is
we don't have to boil our paste
like we used to."
His soh, George, joined his
father at the Bell plant in 194Q,
continuing until 10 years later.
In company with Mr. Hilde-
brand's nephew, Albert, the
trio had- been taking .decorat-
ing jobs after hours, but the
demand for their services in.
creased to such an extent that
in 1950 they went into business
for themselves. Early in 1964
the Hildebrand's—father and
son—opened their store on Main
Street. Here, Mrs. George Hilde-
brand is in charge of the large
stock of paint, wallpapers, 'rugs
an hobby craft. materials.. '
The Hildebrands are active
in the community. The senior
member is an ardent sportsman,
while his sen, is widely known
as the leader of. the , Seaforth
District High School Girls Bugle
Band.
Mayme: "My new boy friend
is so romantie. that every Sime
he speaks to me he starts with
'Fair lady'."
Jayne: "Romantic my eye!
