Winners in the Back -to -School
Contest at Wilson's Drug Store,
a'nnoiinced Friday evening,
were: '
First prize, Christine Cousins,
London; second prize, Michael
Davis, Hensall, who received
pen and pencil sets; third place
winner, Norman Neilands, of
Hensall, received a pen. The
winners' names will be entered
in the all -Canadian contest, to
take, place 'at a later date.
Each one entering the con-
test had to count the Cartridges
for fountain pens which were
on display in the drug store
window. The matic number
was 280, with the three winners
coming the nearest. •
Rally Day SeryieeS were held
in the United Church, Hensall,
Sunday morning, with a joint
seryice of the church school and
congregation. Rev. H. ry Cur-
rie spoke on "The Nevi Cur-
riculum." Carolyn Cook and
IVIichael. Davis read scripture

OBITUARY
SAMUEL. BUCHANAN
Samuel Buchanan, a highly
esteemed resident of Hensall,
passed away in St. Joseph's Hos-
pital, London, op Thursday,
Sept. 17, where he had been
a patient for seven weeks.
In his 92nd year, he was
born in Tuckersmith, and farm-
ed in Medicine Hat, Alta., re-
tiring to Hensall 12 Years ago.
He was unmarried.
Surviving are three sisters:
Miss Margaret Buchanan, Hen-
sall; Miss Mary Buchanan, Reg.
N., Toronto, and Mrs. George
(Jessie) Armstrong, Hensall.
Public funeral services, con-
ducted by Rev. H. F. Currie,
were held from .the Bonthron
Funeral Chapel, Hensall, Satur-
day, Sept. 19. Burial was in
Hensall Union Cemetery. Pall-
bearers were Ira Geiger, Wil-
liam Weekes, -Bob McGregor,
Williard Buchanan, Blighton
Ferg and Garfield Broderick.

The wedding dinner for Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Harris (Donna
Barker) was held at the Com-
munity Hall here on Saturday.

Hayes), of Johannesburg, South
Africa, formerly of Kippen,
Spent Tuesday afternoon and
evening of lasf, week with her

Bert Thomson and children. It's
been 28 years since she left to
go' to Africa.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Lawr-
ence, of Moose Jaw, Sask., are
visiting a few weeks with their
daughter, Mrs. Ted Robinson,
and Mr. Robinson and family.
Mrs. Angus Jones and Mat-
thew, of London, visited a week

was announced winner of the
$1,600,British Mortgage & Trust
Scholarship by W. H. Gregory,
chairman of the Company's
Board of Directors.
Miss Gathercole is the elder
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo.
E. Gathercole. Mr. Gathercole,
is First- Vice-Clrairm-arr- of On-
tario Hydro and a member of
a number of national financial,
educational and economic or-
ganizations.
, Miss Gathercole stfceessfully
completed Grade XIII at Part
Credit Secondary School wih an
average of 89.9% • in nine
papers; highest of the applica-
tions for the British Mortgage
award. She plans to enter the
Business Administration course
at the University of Western
Ontario.
The British Mortgage Schol-
arship, established one year ago,
is open to students in- Secon-
dary Schools ,in Perth, Huron,
Grey, Bruce and Peel Counties,
who have completed Grade
XIII with over 70% in nine
papers and who are accepted
in a foueyear honor course at
the Universities of Toronto,
Queen's, Western Ontario or
McMaster. The winner was
chosen by a selection commit-
tee consisting of Mr. Giegory
of British Mortgage & Trust,
Judge Harold D. Lang, of the
County of Perth, and Brigadier
W. H. Hemphill, President of
the Stratford Shakespearean
Festival Foundation •of Canada.
Miss Gathercole has' a wide
variety of interests. She has
acted in school plays and has
sung in the school choir. She
teaches Sunday School at First
United Church and is interest-
ed in many sports, particularly
skiing, swimming and golf.
