out Engineering Study
° A preliminary engineering
study on dams at Gorrie, Ford-
wich and Wingham under the
Department of Energy and Re-
sources Management new reser-
voir assistance program, will be
carried out by the Maitland Val-
ley Conservation Authority.
Resolutions from the Town-
ship of Howiek, in which the
villages of Gorrie - and- Ford-
Wich are located, and the Town
Of Wingham, have been ap-
proved by the Authority execu-
tive.
Purpose of the engineering
study is to determine the feasi-
bility of rehabilitating the
ponds and dams in those locali-
ties. The Department of Ener-
gy and ,Resources is contribut-
ing 75 per cent of the cost.
The two municipalities will pay
the other 25 per cent respec-
tively.
If major rehabilitation pro-
grams are undertaken, costs
will be shared on the same
basis.
Flood conditions resulted at
Gorrie and water was at a high
level at Wingham following the
estimated five - inch rainfall
which drenched this section of

Fair...
The next meeting is to be
held on Sept. 30, in Clinton

Engage Engineers
The engineering firm of Cry*..
ler, Davis and Jorgensen, Wil-
lowdale, has been engaged to
carry out the engineering stu-
dies. Reports on all three' pro-
jects are to be submitted to the
Authority by early September.
This move marks a switch in
the water conservation program
of the Authority, Until this
summer, water conservation
was encouraged by offering
grants for the building 9f farmi
ponds. Development of reser
voirs was avoided because o
the high cost involved.
Ontario. Government action
this year, however, lifted farm
pond control from conservation
authorities and placed them un-
der the jurisdiction of county
agricultural representatives. At
the_ same time, the green light
was given authorities to consid-
er establishment of reservoirs
under the 75-25 per cent agree-
ment,

With this shift in policy, wa-
ter conservation passed from
the Farin Pond Advisory Board
headed. by ,Harry Tebbutt, of
Hullett Township, to the Flood
Control Board of which Reeve
John Coghlin, of Elma Town-
ship, is chairman.
Mr. Coghlin recently toured
some of the possible reservoir
sites in the Maitland watershed
with consulting engineers. He
advises that a Government sur-
vey recommends 20 sites for
possible reservoirs on the .va-
rious branches of the Maitland.

Reservoirs may never be built
on some of the sites, said Mr.
Coghlin, but development of
others no doubt will be given
consideration by the authority

park for Fordwich. They agreed
.however, to shelve the issue un-
til the engineer's report is re-
ceived on the dam project.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
By the Ontario Tender Fruit Institute
"Buy Canada Choice Canned Fruit"
Pickled Peaches
16' to- 18 medium peaches -
(about 4 lbs.)
1 ,cup white vinegar
1 cup water
41/2 cups_.sugar
2'four-inch sticks cinna-
mon
1 teaspoon whole cloves.
Choose fine -flavoured
tree -ripened Ontario fresh.
peaches that are firm and
free from. blemishes. Put
vinegar, water and sugar
into a 3 -quart saucepan,
simmer 5 minutes. Skin
one half of the peaches
by dropping them in boil-
ing water just long en-
ough so that the skins
will slip off easily. (Be
careful not to leave peach-
es in boiling water long
enough for flesh to soften
or they will not skin
smoothly.) Drop peaches
at once into the syrup,
simmer until tender (about
12 minutes). Lift peaches
into .a bowl and set aside
until you have peeled and
cooked the remainder, Re=
move saucepan from heat;
add peaches in bowl, cov-
er and let stand overnight.
Next morning, pack peach-
es into sterile hot jars.
Add the spices. to the sy-
rup and reheat to boiling.
Pour syrup over pickles to
cover fruit to within 1/4
inch of jar top. Seal, cool
-and store in a cool, dark
place.
