M. Hart. wick, President of The Nation- al Dairy Council of Canada, predicted in a statement re- leased on the even of `June Dairy Month', which this year coincides with the 10th anni- versary of commercial dairying in Canada. "Every major dairy product will show healthy gains above' last year's sales records. 'High consumer . income, a larger population and more realistic prices are the main factors • in the upsurge in consumption," Mr. Hartwick 'said. Mr. Hartwick stated that "for the . third consecutive year, lit- tle change is expected in total milk production." -"Of an expected total of 17,- 000,000,000 pounds of milk sold off farms this year, 47 per cent will be manufactured into butter; 34 per cent will be us- ed for fluid milk sales, 9 per cent will be manufactured into cheese, 5 per cent will be used for evaporated milk and .other concentrated products, and 5 per cent will be used .to make ice cream," he said. June is the month of peak milk production. Climatic fac- tors in Canada are such that a surplus of milk is produced dur- ing the six months of the year when dairy cows are on pas- ture, with production being sub- stantially below consumption during the months from Octo- ber to April. Quebec and Ontario produce nearly two-thirds of the nation- al milk supply, the Prairie Pro- vinces 25 per cent, the Atlan- tic Provinces 7 per cent, and British Columbia 4 per cent. . Mr. Hartwick said that "of the total retail sales value of milk products, dairy• farmers receive 56 per cent. The dif- ference is made up largely' of costs of transportation, labor, processing and packaging, dis- tribution and wholesale and re- tail mark-ups.. U.S. dairy farm- ers receive only 44 per cent of the consumer dollar spent on daiiry foods. The farmer in Can- ada receives 80 per cent of the retail price of butter, the highest return for any ma- jor farm commodity, compared with 72 per cent in the U.S. Helick .Council Howick Township Council met in the clerk's office. Total, $6,922.62. , Canadian dairy farmers receive 53 per cent of the average sale price of fluid milk, 11 'per cent more than in the U.S." Mr, Hartwick stated' that "in relation to wages in •manufac- turing industry, Canadian con- sumers today can purchase well over twice as much butter and two and one-half quarte more milk than was possible 15 years. ago. He said that "unless produc- tion conditions throughout Can- ada during the ,summer months of this year are especially fav- orable, the industry would ex- perience difficulty in manufac- turing sufficient products to meet the growing domestic and export demand resulting • from a levelling. -off in milk produc- tion and population growth."
