Huron County Historical So-
ciety was so "named at the first
meeting of the executive of the
new organization when it met
Monday afternoon at the Hur-

The new. president, Mrs. W.
D. Mack, of Crediton, was in
the chair and u' welcomed the
members of the executive and
the directors. The roll call was
answered by each introducing
themselves. The secretary, Mrs.
Otto Popp, Dungannon, read
the minutes and gave the fi-
nancial statement, stating that
there were now 24 members,
Mrs. Mack had a map of the
county to illustrate where more
representatives were needed to

ON PROFITABLE
FLY CONTROL
Flies mean Ieas milk in the pail, less
beef on the hoof, and they spread
disease.
• 1. Houseflies: They're not blood subkers
and do not cause direct losses in meat
and milk production but they are dis-
ease carriers. Purina's NEW Fly
Checker is one answer, hang it on a
nail or wire or set it on a shelf, window
sill or wherever the flies gather.
Purina's New Fly Checker bas two
fly killers and a special attractant that
kills 'em in bunches.
2. Stable Flies: They're blood suckers;
have piercing mouth parts. About
same size as a housefly; stable flies bite
animal's around the legs and lower ex-
tremities. They spend a part of their
time in barns. Use Dairy Spray or
Dairy Spray Concentrate or Purina
Fly Bait, Scatter Dry Fly Bait around
where the flies bunch up: feed rooms,
barns, window sills, out in the barnlot.
Use Fly Bait (Sugar Base) inside, inix
it with water and brush it on posts,
walls, anywhere that flies gather.
3. Horn Flies: Are about half the size
of ordinary houseflies and will be found
in patches on animals in pasture. When
the number of Horn Flies averages 25
or more—it's time to spray I Dairy
Cattle Dust and Dairy Spray will do
a good job I
4. Horseflies: Use Purina's new Fly
Insecticide Bomb. Excellent for dairy
cattle, beef cattle and . horses. Just
spray it lightly on affected. areas.
Especially good for show animals; safe
for young animals.

THIS WEEK AND NEXT
Goldwater Makes it
By RAY ARGYLE
Senator Barry Goldwater'S
victory' in the California Re=
publican primary, as narrow as
it was, virtually assures his
nomination for president. It
also will probably wreck the
Republican party, sending the
two-party sys-
tem in .the
United States
into the twi-
light for the
next four or
eight years.
To many
Canadians, it
seemed fantas-
tic that the
wildly extrem-
ist Goldwater
Ray Argyle . . could have ev-
er been a ser-
ious -candidate for the ,Republi-
can presidential nomination.
But American politics makes
a fertile field for extremism.
The average Canadian has lit-
tle idea of how widespread the
far r'ght wing has become in
the D.S. in recent years.
The right wing, of which
Goldwater became... the • ready
spokesman, was made up of
otherwise intelligent people who
were, more than anything, per-,
plexed by they refusal of the
rest of the world to ardently
embrace their- concept of Amer-
icanism. They became disillu-
sioned with the United Nations,
tired of fighting brush -fire wars
in far-off lands, and anxious for
a quick and easy victory over
Communism.
T=ie late John Kennedy was
the first president to warn his
fellow Americans in blunt
terms that he had to expect di-
versity in today's world and
that the U.S. could not expect
to re -make the rest of the world
in its own image.
President Johnson is carry-
ing forward this, theme.
It was Goldwater's extreme
statements about using atom
bombs in Vietnam to "defoli-
Begin Phone
Replacement.
Bell Telephone installers will
soon start the task of replac-
ing nearly 800 local telephone
sets in Seaforth.
Reason for this is the con-
version to dial telephone and•
Direct Distance Dialing service
in November, says W. W. Hay-
som, Bell Manager for this
area.
"We try and get this work
done well ahead of the conver-
sion date for several reasons,"
he said. "For one thing, the job
of..re lacing one telephone is
in itself a big undertaking. Al-
so, we have to allow time to
check back and Make certain
each set has been installed in
good order and then run tests
to see that all lines function
correctly."
The Bell manager reminded
customers that seven -figure,
numbers will become effective'
at dial conversion time.
Along with the conversion to
dial, residents will have the
Direct Distance Dialing system
which will enable them to dial
their own station -to -station long
distance calls to some 80,000,-
000 telephones in North Amer-
ica without the aid of an op-
erator.
ate the jungles" which at last
convinced thoughtful Americans
that here was a dangerous and
impulsive man; whose political
philosophy, if he had one, was
far -removed from the main-
stream. of
ain-
stream,of progressive America.
But apparently this was not
good enough for the radical
right in California, Gov.- Gold:
water now - goes into the Re-
publican convention at San
,Francisco next month virtually
unstoppable in his pursuit of
the nomination.
On the convention's opening
day at the Cow Palace, Sen.
Goldwater will have around 600
assured votes of the 655 need-
ed -to nominate., . As his . total
mounts through the roll call of
the states, there will likely be
last-minute switches and' . he
could be over the top by the
time Wisconsin's delegation
casts its ballots.
The liberal forces in the Re-
publican party, centred around
Gov. Rockefeller • and Gov.
Lodge will be powerless to halt
t4i- Goldwater jiggernaut.
,eilt can reasonably be asked,
what is it that Mr. Goldwater
has ,on Republican delegates
that they would choose a man
who is obviously not the prefer-
ence of a majority of rank -and -
file voters, as indicated by his
long succession of primary de-
feats prior to California?
The answer can only,, be that
like the lemming, they go joy-
fully to their oblivion, unmind-
ful of the common suicide on
which they are so intent.
The Goldwater nomination
makes no sense whatever in
present-day America. Progres-
sive Republicans: will desert the
party. He will drag down to
defeat many capable Congres-
sionabl candidates. The -Gold-
water nomination will send the
Republican party into eclipse
for many years to come.. And
perhaps this isn't such a bad
thing.
