Lodge By RAY ARGYLE The two most important Re= publican presidential primar,, les of the year will be run off within the next month—in Ore- gon May 15th and •.in----Sali- fornia June 2. • The likely winners at this stage are Henry Cabot Lodge_ in Ore- gon and Barry Goldwater i n California. And the on- ly reason Ray Argyle • Goldwater will probably win in California is that Mr. Lodge —the hardest -running non -can- didate in the United States—is not listed on the California bal- lot, where no write-ins are al- lowed and- the contest is lim- ited to authorized candidatures. I have recently returned from a swing through these states, where I talked with Re- publican party . pros, seasoned newspapermen and many typi- cal voters. The race for the Republican party nomination is following a curious course . in this presi- dential election year. The hard- er the declared candidates cam- WIND • TORNADO\ • CYCLONE .Insurance R. F. The greater the expo- sure of the two major cam- paigners, Mr. Goldwater and New York Gov. Nelson Rocke- feller; the less enthusiasm they appear to be able to whip up among: the party -faithful.. This unusual state of affairs accounts in large part for the phenomenal popularity of Mr. Lodge, the 1960 Republican vice-presidential candidate who has -served -for= -the --past year as 17.S. ambassador to South Viet- nam. It took Lodge's upset victory in New Hampshire to convince Republican party pros that neither of their big guns were able to sell themselves to the rank and file voter. It also knocked the stuffings out of Richard Nixon's pretentions to the 1964 nomination, although hispublic support, remains gen erally widespread. As both • the .California and Oregon primaries will commit the state's convention delegates on the first ballot, Sed. Gold- water will have to sweep both of them to remain in serious contention. It is clearly evident he 'will be unable to carry Oregon, where the public opinion polls give Mr. Lodge nearly 50 per cent of the vote, with the bal- ance split among five other candidates. Despite 'Mr. Goldwater's in- ability to seriously discuss the political issues that confront the United States today, he probably will carry California. It will be a slender victory, however, made possible only by the lunatic fringe of right wing conservatives and John Hitch- ers' that dominate the party Loses Angeles County. If is becoming increasingly likely, in fact, that non°e of the leading - declared or even un- declared candidates will be nominated by the Republicans to face President Johnson this fall. The following thumb -nail sketches given me by a high- ranking Republican authority will help explain why: Barry Goldwater—"The most ignorant man in American poli- ties today, totally incapable of understanding the issues of our time." Gov. Rockefeller—"Probably the most capable of the lead- ing candidates, but a hopeless loser because of his divorce." Richard Nixon—"A man who will say anything if he thinks it will win him votes, but who has in the last four years per- sonally alienated every impor- tant Republican leader in the. country." • TILL5Mfl _ GARDEN TILL RS make gardening as easy as mowing- our lawn! • Prepare Seed Bedl r'Cdtivnte B • End Weed Palling! een Rowsl • Urn Ground Under, Fertilize, Mulcts!
