Although it was an increase of 83 over the previous twelve months, the total was less than half of the record 2,550 cases in 1958.59. ' As in previus .. yers, wild- life accounted for the major- ity of cases -732. The balance included 295 farm .animals, 7Q dogs and 50 cats. The disease followed the pat- tern of other years, reaching a peak in the winter and taper- ing off in the spring to a low summer incidence, reports the contagious diseases. division. Ontario, with 870, had the largest number of cases; Mani- toba had. 198, Quebec 56, the Northwest Territories , 9. For the first time in recent years, rabies was uncovered in south- eastern Saskatchewan near the Manitoba border where 14 cas- es were confirmed. Ontario counties with ' the largest number of cases ,were Carleton, 85; Huron,' 69; Perth and Wellington, 58 each; Sim- coe, 46; Waterloo, 41; Durham, 39; and Grey, 35. ' Rural municipalities in Mani- toba having the most cases were Woodward, 21; Hamiota, 20; Blanshard and Shoal Lake; 11 each. . t In Quebec, counties with the most cases were Argenteuil, 15; Pontiac, 8; and Chateauguay, 5. Fortunately, rabies has not become established in the dog population and there has been no instance of a dog transmit- ting the disease to another.dog. Every .one of the 70 cases in- volving -dogs' resulted from the animals encountering diseased foxes and other wild -life. In .view of this, federal veter- inarians urge owners to keep their dogs on a leash or tied up, have them vaccinated, and report • all suspected cases " of rabies 'to the nearest- federal veterinarian's office. As a further safeguard, mun- icipalities unicipalities are urged to elimin- ate all stray and unowned dogs. Adults and children - alike are cautioned not to pick up or handle any wild animal , that appears sick or tame. Tameness in wild animals is unnatural and often a sign of rabies, the veterinhrians point out. Needs Crab Control - Two kinds of crab grass may be found in lawns, the hairy crabgrass and the smooth crab- grass. The stems of both kinds lie close to the ground and of-, ten root . at the nodes. This prostrate feature makes them difficult to cut with a lawn- mower. The ' •flowering struc- ture consists of four to twelve finger-like branches at the top of the stem. Both kinds of crabgrass are found only where the turf is thin and where there is much sunlight. Thus proper lawn care practices, su'ch as fertiliz- ing, top -dressing, watering and Mowing at the correct height„ (1i, to 2 inches) will do much to eliminate crabgrass. Botanists.' with the Ontario Department of Agriculture re- commend the use of chemicals to help control this weed. The most effective are those that are applied before the crab- grass seedlings emerge (pre - emergence treatment). These should be applied in APril, or early May. If they . are applied after • the crabgrass seed has emerged they will be ineffec- tive. Chefnicals for the control of crabgrass are available in both liquid and granular forms. Most of the. granular materials are now available • as mixtures with fertilizers so that two op- erations can be carried out at the same time. Granular form- ulations may be applied with a fertilizer spreader. For even distribution divide the requir- ed amount of chemical in two and spread half the material in one direction; then spread the other half at right angles to it: The, following chemicals are recomended and ate commer- cially available in Ontario . un- der various trade. namest DACTHAL is sold as a granu- lar, in fertilizer mixtures, and as a wettable powder (for spray application). It should be ap- plied at the rate of one-third pound 'active chemical per 1,000 square feet (15 pounds per acre). • ZYTRON is also available as a granular, and in fertilizer mixtures and is applied at the same rate as decthal. It may be applied in the fa'fl as well n$ in the spring. TRIFLURALIN is used at much lower rates than the above two chemicals, about 2 pounds per acre of active T lf'a' terial. It is also available in similar form- ulations in early spring. Since the percentage of ac- tive chemical differs in the Vti- rious commercial formulations available, it is ,important to fol- low the, directions and warn.
