Although Goderich meets
in spring are notorious for
poor weather, excellent
weather conditions pre-
vailed this year for the Huron
Perth championships. Under
sunny skies and tempera-
tures in the teens, athletes
from 11 Huron Perth schools
were able to perform well.
The F.E. Madill was
smaller this season with a
total of 33 athletes. However,
those 33 athletes were able
to dig deep and persevere
and achieve some outstand-
ing results. They won two
team titles, achieved two
individual championships
and amassed enough points
to compete for the overall
title. This year Northwestern
SS edged Madill out winning
the championship for the
first time in the history of
their school. Madill was a
close second.
With only 33 athletes, eve-
ryone was called on to per-
form well and do all their
events. It was an all round
team effort with the athletes
achieving 36 `personal bests'
(PB's) and 1 relay PB.
In the midget girls divi-
sion, Jordyn Stuzman
sprinted down the stretch to
earn 2nd in sprint hurdles
and 3rd in distance hurdles.
At the high jump pit, Rachel
Van Stuyvenburg soared
over the bar at 1.40m to win
the event. Ally Marston was
able to qualify in both the
400 (3rd) and triple jump
(4th). On the track, Dana
Dolmage proved her abilities
in distance running qualify-
ing for WOSSAA in the 800m,
1500m, and 3000m. Chris-
tina Schraa had excellent
results in the throws, throw-
ing the shot, discus and jave-
lin farther than ever before.
The junior girls team was
well balanced and strong
enabling them to win the
team championship with
points from sprints, throws,
jumps and distance running.
Despite a severe ankle
injury, Jessica Johnston rose
to the challenge winning the
sprint hurdles and high
jump and coming second in
distance hurdles. Team
mates Taylor Montgomery
and Jasmine Vader contin-
ued to be the throwing duo
winning top spots in shot
put, discus and javelin. Yas-
min Eddijli and Lexi Smith
earned lots of points on the
track in the 100m, 200m,
long and triple jump. And
Emma Metcalfe and Nicole
Ward persevered on the
track earning top rankings in
400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m.
and steeplechase. The 4X100
relay team of Yasmin Eddijli,
Nicole Ward, Emma Met-
calfe, and Lexi Smith
sprinted the baton around
the track in the 4X100m relay
to win first place.
In the senior girls division,
Karissa Schiestel and Sydney
Wightman both hurled the
discus over 30m to win first
and second places. Karissa
also won javelin (28.29m)
and was 4th in shot put. In
long jump, Sonja Petersen
leaped 4.39m to win the
event. Emily Meier worked
hard on the track qualifying
in all three distance runs:
800m, 1500m, and 3000m.
Brittany Walden won 2nd in
high jump and 4th in triple
jump.
In the midget and junior
boys division, Austin Eadie
led the way winning long
jump (5.19m) and leaping
10.69m to earn 2nd place in
triple jump. Nathan Ham-
mer, a recent addition on
the team qualified in all
three of his events (400m,
800m, and triple jump).
Craig Murray crushed his
best performance in the
1500m with his clocking of
5:29.89. Two midget boys
joined two junior boys to
form a 4X100m relay team
in the junior division. Matt
Darrell, Nathan Hammer,
Austin Eadie, and Mitch
Deans sprinted with the
baton around the track with
a winning time of 49.96 s.
Mitch Deans won the indi-
vidual Huron Perth junior
title with three wins: 200m
(24.42), long jump (5.66m),
and triple jump (11.90m).
Team mate Matt Darrell
also had strong perfor-
mances in the 400m
(54.69s -second place) and
triple jump (11.24m -2nd
place() and long jump
(5.41m -third place).
Sprinter, Shaun Darling
qualified in both 200m and
400m helping his team of
three junior athletes win
second place in overall jun-
ior boys points.
The Madill senior boys
division had balance and
ability on its favour. Justin
McKague led the way win-
ning the senior boys indi-
vidual championship with
wins in the high jump, tri-
ple jump, and long jump.
Team mate Lyndon smith
was runner up to McKague
winning the sprint hurdles
(15.98s), and the 100m
(11.58s) and leaping 11.45
in triple jump to win sec-
ond place. Ayden Tiffin
contributed points in high
jump and triple jump. Ben
Newell, nursing a knee
problem, managed to place
well in all three of his
events despite the injury.
He won discus with a
standing throw of 35.58,
earned third in javelin with
a short approach, and
jumped off his `wrong leg'
in high jump to earn fourth
(1.60m). Mitch Ward also
contributed significant
points in all three throws
with top placings in shot,
discus and javelin. Billy
Darrell helped Madill dom-
inate the jumping pits with
his second in long jump
(5.58m) and third in triple
jump (11.24m) in addition
to the above results. Dis-
tance runners Michael
Schraa and Brandon Mur-
ray also contributed points
on the track with Schraa
running the steeplechase to
win third and Murray earn-
ing a significant personal
best in 3000m with
10:47.71. The senior boys
were clear winners of the
senior boys title over the
larger teams of Northwest-
ern and St. Mikes.
The top six athletes in each
event qualified to compete
at WOSSAA May 19, 20 at TD
Waterhouse Stadium in Lon-
don. Madill has 31 athletes
who qualified and who make
the trip to London to
compete.
