Escape Room Goderich celebrates grand opening
Laura Broadley
Goderich Signal Star
You have one hour. One hour to
solve the mystery and get yourself
out. You have a series of clues to fol-
low before you can escape.
That's all happening in Goderich
thanks to the newly opened, Escape
Room Goderich. An escape room is
popular adventure game where a
group of people are locked in a room
where they have to solve different
puzzles and clues using the elements
in the room to get out of the room in
one hour. It started out as an online
game, but has developed into a phys-
ical adventure game.
Shannon Edwards, 17, is the entre-
preneur behind the Goderich loca-
tion, she participated in the Summer
Company program available through
the provincial government. The pro-
gram gives students start-up money
to kick off a new summer business.
The program allows students to col-
laborate with local business leaders
that offer mentorship and advice,
which Edwards received from the
Huron Small Business Enterprise
Centre.
The Grade 11 student at Goderich
District Collegiate Institute applied
to the Summer Company program in
the middle of April. After she applied
she had a series of interviews and
meetings with Alison Lobb, a busi-
ness consultant with HSBEC.
The idea to do an escape room
came from the fact that Edwards and
her family have always used board
games and video games as a form of
entertainment. They've gone to cities
where escape rooms are becoming
more common.
"They're just so much fun. The team
work and the skills you learn from it,
and just the challenges that it provides
is just a lot of fun," Edwards said.
Goderich doesn't have a lot of
entertainment for young people, and
so she wanted to bring "big city
entertainment" to her small town.
"I just think it's kind of awesome that
we canbring something like that to our
own small town that would normally
just be in big cities;" she said.
Edwards said she has always
wanted to start a new business with
the help of her family, but they
weren't able to take the risk finan-
cially, so the start up grant of $1,500
really helped. An additional $1,500 is
granted after students fulfill the
requirements of the program.
Edwards' parents and sister are
helping her run Goderich Escape
Room for the summer.
"I'm very lucky to have very sup-
portive parents," Edwards said.
Escape Room Goderich has
three different rooms for people to
escape from: Grandma's Attic;
Power Inc., which is divided into a
change room and training room;
and a Doctor's Office.
The cost is $25 per person, and
Edwards recommends having a
group of four on your team as that
gives you time to solve the game
within the allotted time.
In addition to the escape rooms
there are also tables setup for people
to come and play board games. You
can pay $5 per person to play a selec-
tion of over 200 board games for as
long as you like. Board game players
are welcome to bring food and non-
alcoholic drinks.
Escape Room Goderich is located at
46 Victoria Street, North. Walk-ins are
welcome, but it is preferred to book
your time beforehand either online or
by coming in during operating hours.
The Escape Room Goderich is
open Tuesday to Thursday from 3 -
10 p.m., Friday to Saturday from 1-
10 p.m., and Sundays from 3 - 10
p.m. It is closed on Mondays.
