McCormick enjoys return to United States, taking top spot at dog show
Troy Patterson
Editor
Local auctioneer Dave
McCormick topped a Ten-
nessee State dog show with
canine companion in July.
McCormic and his three-
year-old bluetick hound Blue
Dollytookthe championship at
the United Kennel Club's
Bluetick Breeders of America
(BBOA) Tennessee State
Championship on July30, 2016.
One of the largest dog reg-
istries in the USA, McCor-
mick said via e-mail on top
of the bluetick hounds there
were other different breeds
of coonhounds competing,
including Black and Tan,
English, Redbone and
Walker coonhounds.
The event McCormick
won was based on confor-
mation relevant to the book
of standards that is printed
for the reason of being able
to judge the dog for every
aspect that they should have.
"Color is an important fac-
tor, color of eyes and athletic
type body and also the pref-
erence of cat like feet, rather
that flat feet, which are worth
10 points in judging alone,"
he said via e-mail. "Each of
these things that I just men-
tioned are worth a different
amount of points. There were
people there from many
states, including North Caro-
lina, Kentucky, Indiana and
other states as well:'
There were about 20 dogs
total in the show and said
the competition saw many
quality dogs.
"I've had coonhounds for
the best part of 50 years now
and have had three top plac-
ings in the UKC World Cham-
pionships over that time,"
McCormick said, adding he's
always had love for bluetick
hounds. "It is fun to compete
with folks from all over the
continent. The folks that I was
involved in in this event were
very sociable and made me
feel very welcome."
Although it has been close
to 20 years since he fre-
quently competed with his
dogs, McCormick was recog-
nized for his past success
with a "first name warm
welcome."
"They had remembered
the dogs that I used to com-
pete with," he said.
McCormick plans to take
Dolly to Indiana on Sept.
22-23 to compete in the
World Coonhound Champi-
onships, if work allows for it,
he said, adding his auction
business is quite busy.
McCormick said Dolly was
bred, born and raised at his
home and used to be an avid
coonhunter. He would work
his dogs on a regular basis,
preparing them for pleasure
hunting and night hunt com-
petitions, which he said is
another way of competing
with coonhounds.
"The last few years due to
health reasons and work, I
have not been able to do my
dogs justice in that field," he
said. "Hopefully this fall when
I am done showing Dolly, I
can find the time to put her in
the woods at night and hone
her skills at treeing racoons.
She is a beautiful dog to look
at, but has also shown the
desire to make a top cooper."
Her registered name is
Champion, "PR" McCor-
mick's Blue Dolly and said he
has already made plans to
have her bred when her show
career is completed, adding
she will be bred to a top stud
dog from Oklahoma.
Dave McCormick of Teeswater, second from left, took the top prize at the Tennessee State
Championship Show on July 30, 2016. McCormick competed in the BBOA Tennessee State
Championship with his UKC registered Bluetick Coonhound named McCormick's Blue Dolly. It was
fairly large competition with competitors attending from many states.
