Former Bruce Beach cottager Jennifer Primmer took in a sunset at Boiler Beach, in the southeast corner of the township on April 17, 2016. The wreck of the Erie Belle boiler is currently within the waves, as water levels have remained high over the winter. Honouring the man who brought the Cup to Lucknow Darryl Coote Reporter To know with absolute certainty what city a profes- sional hockey play calls home, wait to see where he takes the Cup. Back in 2007 when Dave Farrish won Lord Stanley's cup as assistant coach of the Anaheim Ducks, he could have taken it to any number of cities he played in during his hockey tenure, but he didn't. He brought it to Luc - know -- his hometown. And with it a parade attracting people from all over to see what some con- sider the most difficult tro- phy to win in all sports. To recognize his accom- plishments and his connec- tion to the hamlet, locals Mark Hackett and Luke Cranston have been working to make July 9, 2016, Dave Farrish Day in Lucknow. "He means a lot [to Luc - know]," said Hackett, elabo- rating that each player and coach to win the Cup is awarded 24 hours to do with it as he likes. And for Farrish to bring it all the way to Lucknow and share it with the town was something special. "So that's how much he thinks of his hometown," Hackett said. "So I think we should definitely be doing this to show our support" The idea to hold a day in Farrish's honour was born during a recreational hockey tournament in January. Cranston was working bar at the arena's snack booth and was staring at Paul Hender- son's signature painted large on the arena wall. Henderson is another Lucknow hockey hero who is known the country over for his game -winning goals dur- ing the '72 Summit Series against the USSR. To honour the Hockey Hall of Famer, Lucknow named a section of the arena after him --The Paul Henderson Hall. "And it just kind of came to me," Cranston recounts. "That sounds really good flowing off the tongue, Hen- derson Hall. So I thought there's another local hero from this area who was good enough to bring back the Cup in '07 to the town, and I thought, 'Jez, it'd be nice if we can name a portion of the arena after Dave Farrish:" And continuing the theme of alliteration, Cranston thought of The Dave Farrish Foyer. Hackett, who is the facility manager and recreation coordinator at the arena, was coincidentally considering of doing something similar when Cranston approached him with the idea of naming part of the arena after Farrish. "And I took it to our recre- ation board," he said, 'L and they were fully on board with it right away." Cranston, while doing fur- ther research into Farrish, then learned that 2016 holds some significant milestones for the 59 -year-old. "I found out June 1st is the 40th anniversary of the day he was drafted into the NHL," Cranston said. "And also August 1st is his 60th birthday. So I thought, 'Jez, if he would be in to somehow making an appearance between those two dates or sometime in the summer it would be a real cool way to recognize both things and almost be like an early birth- day for him. And so I thought maybe we can have a Dave Farrish Day." They then contacted the New York Ranger's 1976 sec- ond -round draft pick, and current assistant coach of the Colorado Avalanche, by email. Farrish responded within a half hour saying he'd be in town early July and would like to help any way he could. "We were blown away that he was onboard," Cranston said. "And he offered to help and bring back some new memorabilia for us to put up."
