ARMS, INSTANTS; -and TONGUES
If you're good at riddles, it shouldn't be very hard
to find the answer to these three questions:'
What can- reach across a continent, rhies no hands?
r What takes you places in an instant, yet never moves itself?'
What speaks in a-thousanll-tnngt s, yet has none of its own?
The answer is of (course your telephone . . :that
easy-to-use convenience that takes you places every day,
helps the family in so many ways. It helps you get news
and information, make dates, invite guests, arrange meet-
ings and social activities. It's a very comfortable way to.
go shopping in blustery . January days . without getting
your feet cold :. and the :only way to check with the
aby=sitter without leaving the party. There's certainly
no question that the telephone has many uses. When-
ever you need it -whatever you need it for --it's always
there to call on.
TELEPHONE CHAINS =- LIFELINES
FOR THE ELDERLY
For the benefit of•.Seaforth residents who may not
have seen a recent item in "Telephone News," the leaf-
let which accompanies telephone bills, ,1'd like to sum it
up again here It's one of those things automatically
make you wonder why it wasn't -thought of long ago. It
concerns elderly people -particularly those who live alone
-and the fear that sudden_.illness or accident may one
day prevent them from even reaching -the phone to call
for help. The answer to this problem, as suggested by
the Leaside (Ontario) branch of the Red Cross, is a
"telephone chafe" of five- or- si, ,,elderly -people-who
phone each other every day in a pre -arranged „order.
That ,• is, ' each. . ehain• ••member makes -one phone call and
receives one call every day. If a chain. member cannot
reach the member he is to call, he notifies the member
who acts as Chain 'Captain. If the -Chain Captain .cannot
reach the member within a few hours, hein turn noti-
fies the chain's sponsoring group (which' can be `a church,
social or womeirs club or any .groupLof interested citizens)
and one of the sponsors immediately Makes a visit to.
find out the reason for the unanswered phone.
Apart from the obvious security of mind Such a
system. brings, it has other advantages as well: It is the
elderly people themselves who check .up .on.;one another,
giving thein--a--definite role and responsibility to enjoy,
and of course very close friendships, Gan' easily develop
from the daily conversations. •
Information on, suggested . procedures for organizing -
a Telephone Chain is available in brochure form . from -
the Senior Citizens Committee, Ontario Division, Canadian
Red Cross Society, 460 Jarvis St., Toronto 5, Ont.

And finally, in a salute to the New Year we're now
in, a few words from an anonymous philospher:
"It's wise to take an interest in your future -that's
where you're going to sPend the rest of your life."

That Fresh Neighbor
DEAR DORIS-I have been

and my boy friend and. -I get
along real well. My problem
is -my- next door neighbor. I
babysit for them, em but I am
Y
scared to death of the.. man
there. He always manages to
get home first and tries to get,
fresh with me. I have slapped
his face so many times . and
told him to act like a married
man, but''that doesn't seem' to
work. He is -always back 'for'
more. 0
So ,to get rid of him, I went
to work 30 miles away but the
other day te;cacire up and walk
ed. in. Then, Doris, .he started
kissing me, and for the ,.first
time I really liked it. But when
he started getting fresh;°1I'
could hardly stop' him. He was
begging me "to give in. I ,was
shocked! f told him to .,geton
his way and not to come••<back.
If he does come back; •Doris,
•I-dorrtt••know what to do. I like
him very much; but Iam'fright-
ened of him.

DEAR WOULD-BE - It is
your dish. Members , in many
countries not only talk; they
sing, play guitars, O chatter in
Chinese and German and what -
have -you. - ,
Sometimes tape .pals teach
each other a new language; and
you are helped to find new
friends with interests like your
own. Nice effort in the direc-
tion of international ' under-
standing! The organization is
World Tapes for Education, P.
O. Box 1570, Dallas, Texas. En-
quiries are welcomed.
DEAR FRIGHTENED-
Don't.
weaken now. Your whole fu-
ture is at stake. If he so much
as shows his face at your door
he should be ordered . away in
no uncertain terms. Any slight-
est touch should be treated like
poison. The police are as near
as your telephone,
You `can prove your good
faith by telling your boy friend.
.did if this sexy uncontrolled
male persists in inflicting his
unwelcomed attention on you,
his wife must be told.
Remember, he is the one who
is ruining his marriage, so far.
Don't join the conspiracy.
DEAR DORIS My sister
thinks she knows all about
babies. She . alarms me. Her
latest idea is that you should
lift a baby liy the wrists, and
this is the way she lifts hers.
Please tell me if I am worry-
ing needlessly,. What is the
-right way to lift_a baby?
Young Sister
.DEAR SISTER - With your
hands under the armpits; or
with one hand under the 'seat,
Lifting the little ones by the
wrists can and does cause dis-
locations. (This message is
from a pediatrician.)
DEAR DORIS - Because of
painful sinus trouble, 1 simply
cannot emerge out into icy
weather without being all bun-
dled up, especially around my
face and forehead.
My fiance has asked me to go
with him to an important for-
mal dance. I can't Wear a ski
helmet to top. off an evening
dress and evening coat! If I
go bareheaded even to walk
from a car to the hotel, I'll
have a raging headache all eve-
ning. What can I -°wear, and
not look ridiculous?
Engaged
--DEAR -ENGAGED-' FTave you
seen those lovely, lacey, fine
wools scarves' two or three yards
long and 18 inches wide? They
"come in beautiful pastel shades
and were simply made for a
gal with your problem!
You can wrap them aropnd
your head (twice, if you like!)
and toss the - tail around your
neck. Pull up the throat part
to cover your nose for the
dash from cam to hotel door.
What's 'more, you will' be
much admired. Hunt inthe
handcraft shops, or in 'our
favorite ' ' departmental store.
You'll either find a fine knit
one,, or a delicate,< handwoven
varietywith,
shining metallic..
threads at the ends for an ere -
gent effect.
