Announce Bean Tests
for Farms in ' Huron
.Hon. W. A. Stewart, Minister'
of 'Agriculture, has announced
that a comprehensive research
program into all Phases of beam
production would be carried out.
in Huron County:. this year.
Under the direction of the
Ontario Agricultural Research
Institute and the Soils, and Crop
Branch •of, the Department of
Agriculture, test plots will be
established at Varna and at
Kippen. The program will in -
elude the testing of promising
new strains from Michigan and
the Harrow Experimental Sta-
tion in Ontario. The demon-
stration plots will check out
herbiscides and insecticides in
addition to ekhaustive fertility
trials. Much of the testing will
be carried out by soils and crop
specialists on growers' farms.
"It is my conviction that work
of'this type can be carried out
effectively by test plots on co-
operatiOig farms in the various
counties of the province, rather
than increasing the number of
experimental !arms.
The 'Soils and Crop branch of
the Department is designed to
work in close co-operation with
local soil and crop • improve-
ment 'associations in evaluating
new crop production techniques
and their utilization under ac-
t 1 conditions. Under this
m the local 'people are an
im ortant part in both the
planning and evaluation of the
tests."
With the International Plow-
ing Match being held in Huron
County this year, a special pro-
gram has been planned on the
site of the match, Projects
demonstrating new varieties,
fertilizer, types and method of
application, as well aaa insect
control, will prove of interest
to the many visitors to the
plowing match.
