"A credit union is not an ordinary financial concern,
seeking to enrich its members at the expense of the
general public. Neither is it a loan company, seeking to
make a profit at the expense of unfortunates . . . the
credit union is nothing of the kind.; it is the expression,
in the field of economics of a high social ideal."

Baseball Thriving in '69
Baseball was a popular
spectator sport in Seaforth 100
years ago as records of ,1869
indicate. Directors of the club
in that year' ere:.wPresident -
James Elliott; vice president -
J. 0. Sills; Captain H. Cameron;
Secretary - James Cline; Treas-
urer - Thomas Bell.
And it appears that they
were good then too, although
it could hardly be called de-
fensive ball. A short article in
the July 2, 1869 issue States:
"The match played between.
Ainly*ville (Brussels) and Sea-
fordi,, yesterday, resulted in
_31 runs for the former, and 57
was for the latter. Majority for
Seaforth 26 runs. The best of
feeling prevailed." '
In the return match Sea -
forth won 46,26.
On May 25, 1874,the Stars,
as they were now called went
to Guelph to play the Guelph
Maple Leafs who were Domin-
ion Champions. Playing for
Seaforth were: J, Lamb, pit-
cher and captain; W. Paulin,
catcher; R. Lattimer, 1st base;
D. Sills, 2nd bale-; H. W. C.
Meyer, 3rd base; Heriry Cam-
eron, S. ; J. McMurray, right
field; D. Hogan, centre field;
Hugh Cameron, left field.
The year before Seaforth
. had beaten Guelph and a good
game Was expected. Unfort-
Unately something went wrong,
The May 29, 1874 edition had
this to say:
"On Monday last, 25th of
May, the Star Baseball Club.,
of Seaforth, went to Guelph to
play the Maple Leaf Club of
that town. It will berememb-
ered that last year the Maple
• Leaf Club, then, as now, the
Champions of Canada, were
defeated by the Stars °tithe—
Seaforth ground by a score of
1.

In -a 1907 public school in
Walton, Ontario, is one of Nuf-
field's most successful dealer-
ships according to a story by
Ian Carruthers in the Canadian
Firm Equipment Dealer.
, Localsesidents were amus-
ed when Gordon and Neil Mc -
Gavin„ both born and raised in
Walton, bought the school' .61
some,yeari ago. Then to their
surprise the schoolhouse 'was con-
verted easily into a farm equip-
ment dealership. The service
shop is in a basement classroom;
the counter, display area and
parts department are all in the
large main -floor classroom; ahd
the teacher's offices have been
turned into two comfortably
small business 'offices. By com-
parison with their former site at
the main corner in Walton,- the
sohoolhouse, has provided a
large arnount of frciiitage and
space, and an enviably small
overhead.
, Few farm equipment deal-
ers.have been candidates in'a.
federal election. 1G'Ordon Mc -
Gavin is pne who has. Up
until 1963 he had beeiron the
local school board for 16 years.
At that time he was 4sked to
run federally by the Liberal
Party in Huron Riding. His
Conservative opponent had
held the seat for 25 years, and
to complicate matters, was a
friend of long standing. In
spite sf his -defeat, Mr. McGavin
Is sure' 'that his experience in
politics has benefited his deal-
ership. "Being involved in the
community is one of the keys
'to success in any local business.
Mr, Mc,Gavin has found that
those.who come into his shop
to chat about politics and pick
up a part, are Conservatives as
often, as Liberals, though the
Conservatives are apt to make
sly wisecracks. It's all good
for business though.
,. When Gordon McGavin
started selling mathinery in
1936 in Walton, he Was a
Cockshutt dealer. At the 1946
Victory Plowing Mata, of
'which tke was,pr9sidpnt, he
saw farmers tilting a eat
interest in NeWli011and balers,
bd took a contract with New
Holtand.$inee that time he
has ben adtlg to his tong
27 to 20. On the present occ-
asion the Stars w're not so
successful, they being beaten,
as the score below. will show, by
a score of 30 to 0. Only two
of the Seaforthites, Shaw and
Henry Cameron aahieved the
first base on strikes. Referring
to the game the Guelph Mercury
says: 'It was a very one-sided
affair, and we doubt not would
have been more•-sOr had it not
been for the dampness of the
ground and the subsequent in-
jury to the ball. To the credit
of the Stars it must be said that
some very fine catches were
made by the left fielder, and
several good throws by the
others, but they will have to
pick up wonderfully if they hcpe
to visit Guelph- again.
Seaforth was undaunted.
They went on to prove they
were good and lost very few
games. In June'1876 they Won
the silver cup for the Five
Counties Championship by de-
feating Listowel Red Stockings
21 - 10 in Seaforth before 300
fans. The June 16 Expositor
said: "The pitching of Hager -
don was excellent, the Red
Stockings being unable to pun-
ish him with much effect,
while the Stars found
trouble batting Smith. The
catching of Paulin and Sangster
were fully up to the mark, few
balls passing either."
During the 80's baseball
died in Seaforth and it was not
until 1897 that it was reorganiz-
ed and Seaforth again took its
place as a prominent baseball
