Success Despite Mud International Probably the biggest e1t ever planned for Huron was the International Plowing. Match at Sea - forth in October, 1966. Occupying several hundred acres in McKillop with headquarters centred on Scott Poultry Farm, the match attracted more than 50,000 people despite the fact that rain fell continuously throughout the week and turned the match site into 'a a sea of mud. Plowing Match Typical of the condition that greeted visitors is (right) a street in front of the headquarters building with a car abandoned in the mud.. (Above) The match site from the air is seen as traffic flowed in from No. 8 highway to the right: Sea - forth isat the topcentre.of the picture hidden by trees. mu.* rt.. re, SALUTES '1D• 4,-, R N ' -,•r• ' . ; g • P. •-r,.>•v THE TOWN OF SEAFORTH AND THE HURON EXPOSITOR ON THEIR 100th BIRTHDAYS Huron County has a proud history of progress since the first white settlers arrived through the virgin forests more than 140 years ago. It was John Galt, the founder of the Canada Company, who, in 1827, conceived the Huron Road which cut across what was to become Huron County, and on to Lake Huron at Goderich. The new road encouraged settlement, and among those first settlers were those who cleared the area which in, a few years would be the site Gf the Vil- lages of Harpurhey and Egmondville. In 1868 the Vil- lage of Seaforth came into being between the older com- munities. Seaforth through the years has made a major contribution to the economy of the county. Its citizens through their ability and participatioehave on many • occasions brought renown not only to the town but to the county as well. The town — one of five in the county — as it looks to the future, continues to exhibit that pride and persistence which were such factors in its establishment a century ago. itia.41.141 HURON COUNTY Calvin Gordon Boyd Girvin Reed Wilmer Hardy Grant Stirling Everett Mcllwain Clifford R.
