Eire this year. Most of these fires will be caused by carelessness

THESE FIRE
POTENTIALS
Frayed electric wiring, clutter and
rubbish, faulty. gating units: these are just
a few of the things that can start a fire in
your home.
ELECTRICITY IS SAFE AND RELIABLE!
When•Proper Observance is Given to These Simple Rules:
1, •See that all wiring extensions are carried out
by qualified and experienced wiring contract-
ors. This insures 'final check-up by the Wir-
ing Jespector of the Hydro -Electric Power,
Commission of Ontario.
. •
2. Never use fuses larger than '15 amperes on
branch circuits in your house.
3. Don't "plug" fuseby inserting coins behind
them. The fuse serves similarly to the safety
valve of a boiler.
4. 'Make frequent inspectibn of flexible cods.
5. Don't hang ant electrievvire op. nails. Don't
-tack extension cords to baseboard or walls.
6. Keep electrical heating devices away from
, 'combustibles.
7. Keep lamps away from clothing, paper, de.
8. Never use, iro,n, toaster or lamps as bed war-
mers.
9. Install convenience outlets to avoid excessive
. lengths of. extension cords.
10.NEVER USE GASOLINE IN YOUR ELEC-
TRIC WASHERS!

Fire Devastation in Can-,
ada in the last 10 years has
claimed 5,800 lives, injur-
ed and disfigured 21,00.0
persons, and has destroyi
ed Etn estimated property
worth $1,410,009,000.
In 1967, the estimated
fatalities in fire . was 673.
The preliminary 'figure of
the direct material loss
last year of 64,251 fires is
$156046,517. This com-
pares with the recorded
IS 'in 1966 %Of 1162,718,-
013 in 68,463 fires.
The figures srelpased 013
provincial reports to the
Dominion Vire Commis-
sioner.
. What is, disturbing is
much of this loss could
• have been avoided had
those involved followed a
few simple rules.
Sound an- immediate al-
arm in fire. Call the Fire
Department. Don't take it
for granted that some-
body has acted.
How you react in -emer-
gency can mean your job,
your home, your life. If the
building is destroyed, no-
body will be Working or
living there tomorrow.
Maybe never.
In a recent Canadian
business office fire, it was
20 minutes before help was
called.
Safe Evacuation
-It takes only a few min-
utes for a minor fire to be-
come a big one. Analysis of
large loss fires in Nprth
America shows that dis-
covery was prompt in on-
ly a third of the outbreaks.
Right Extinguishers
Water is still the best
way to put out most fires,
and automatic sprinkler
_protection is. a great asset
to a building. But remem-
ber that water is useless
in, say, an oil fire. Water
only spreads the burning
oil.
Read the Directions
Make a point .of reading
the directions on the fire
extinguishers available
where you work. You may
never know when Yours
will be the responsibility of
action in emergency. Yon
may be the means of pre-
venting a small fire from
becoming a big one.

Over Fuses
Invite Fire Threat
An over -fused electric
circuit invites fire in the
home. And a national sur-
vey shows,, that hundreds
of thousan s of Canadian t
dwellings ave the wrong
fuse (costing less than a
dime) in a socket.
' In a typical municipali-
ty of 25,000, fire investiga-
tors found that only 15%
of the homes visited were
properly fused. ,
What ' is over -fusing?
It's when you use a 20, 25
or 30 ampere sogket fuse
in an ordinary . byanch .

Why can such fuses pro- -
vide a- fire hazard?. Be-
cause they engender a
senSe of false security.
They do not "blow" when
the "load" is dangerously
increased. The , wiring
heats. Heat plus fuel and
oxygen means fire. If the
wiring is concealed, fire
may start in the wall.
