Library
that• under the new Huron
County' librarY sYstele now in
force, the ,local library no long-
er has the right' to purchase
new books. The local library
may select books from prepar-
ed lists but cannot now go out
and purchase books.
-Since, under any centralized
system, local autonomy. ceases
to exist, I Was tillable to as-
certain who exactly prepares
the lists from which selections
can be made. Of orie thing I
am certain . . :whoever pre-
pares the lists is in a position
to direct, centrol and censor
the reading material available
in local, libraries. This usurp-
ation of local authoritycan
quickly lead to yet more con,
trol of the, people and a conse-
• quent negation of their free-
dom. It is. with apparently dis-
connected and Perhaps insigni-
ficant controls of this calibre
that the. Brave New World .be-
came feasible. I am sure that
= Andrew Carnegie did not in-
tend to have his libraries used
as a means to control his fel-
lo wr creatures; rather, it was his
intention to broaden their
minds and make ever wider the
gap between freedom and slav-
ery. •
Like so many Canadians, I
really did not bother very much.
when I heard that the local li-
brary would be swallowed by
the County Library System. The
arguements in favor read well,
more economical, a wider choice
of reading material and so on
and no one really went out on a
linib with an impassioned state-
ment of the disadvantages. Now,
with the system in effect, the
danger becomes apparent. Who-
ever controls the LIST controls
the mind and can, over a per-
iod of time, so direct the think-
ing and attitudes of the people,"
