WEIRD FUNERAL CEREMONY. Obsequies of prominent Chinaman Out West Attract Attention. "Gone. Gone. Into the shades has our cousin gone. Wong Hong. great and noble, has gone into the shades to join his illustrious ancestors. Woe unto us. Weep. Weep aloud. Disturb - the silence, lest the evil spirits molest the soul of the. dead. Woe unto us. Weeii. Weep aloud." (Free translation of Chinese fun- eral dirge.) In the Chinese cemetery at New Westminster, B. C., lies the body of Wong Hong, ex -leader of the local branch of the Chinese Reform Assam. - tion, head of a. large family, beloved and honored of his people. The funeral was most elaborate, over two hundred Celestials taking part in the ceremonies. For fully five hours, pandemonium reigned in Chinatown. Three musical aggrega- tions assailed the air with variations of all kinds of musical notes, the ma- jority being entirely foreign to: the curious crowd' .of white people who had assembled to witness the weird eeremonies. For three hours the body lay itt state in front of the Chinese Masonic hall, the casket being opens ed and part of the body exposed to view. Hundreds of punk sticks burn- ed before the procession started on the long walk to the cemetery, while prayer ' papers were scattered, all around the coffin. These papers are perforated' and the Chinese state that the idea is that the evil spirits are eonipelled. to creep through till the holes in the prayer papers while en- gaged in the pursuit of the soul of the departed. Twelve hacks, buggies and wagons took part in the procession, while a large number of Chinamen followed on foot. The Vancouver contingent of Chinese Masons who had come over specially to attend the funeral worn robes of white cloth, ,while other Chinamen were arrayed 'in red and white garments. At the graveside, ttunierous cere- monies were gone through, the prin- cipal one being the scattering of rice and other food for the use of the de - pa ,ted wltelt on his long journey to the spirit world. All the clothes and blankets used by the deceased pre- vious to bis death we:e burnt alter the body had been lowered into the grave. Three years hence, the bones of ti,'ong long will be disinterred, all adhering portions of tiesh will be scraped off with a sharp pieee of wood, and neatly labelled and packed in a box„ these mortal remains of the dead ratan will be shipped to his no- tivo country, there to be interred with the bones of his forefathers. 4 ANTIQUITY OF GEOMETRY, Th* Science May Have Exist*d In India For Long Agee. Did we learn our rule of three and our Euclid from India? Researches have brought to ligirt astronomical ta- bles in India which must have been constructed by the principles of geom- etry. In fact, it is founded on. a geometrical theorem whiclt was not known to the geometricians of Europe before the time of Victa, about 200 years ago, And It employs methods of demonstra- tion unknown to the Greeks, who used others. The former have been attrib- uted to the Arabs, but it is possible they have received this improvement in trigonometry as well as the numer- ical characters from In iii. Irish Stories.
