The Huron Expositor, 1979-12-06, Page 10— THE HURON EXPOSITOR, DECEMBER 6, 1676' Sport afl. y Pt -tut It It Seem* :as if Seafbtth District BO School has found the• sport at svhichit excels. Basketball; A few weeks ago, thg junior Bide.team,: the 'Whippets, won the Huron -Perth conferencetitle with .a triumph over the team: from Stratford Northwestern, Secondary School in a two: game playoff series. This was the first. time that a SDHS basketball team had captured that title in at least 16- ears a din to Whippets Years, ccor .. B pl?e coach. Richard Burgess.. To top the season off; the girls won the Western Ontario Secondary School Association (WOSSA) championship in Tillsonburg last weekend, This. was achieved by defeating Norwich in the finals by .a score of 54-35. Mary Thompson led: Seaforth with 18 points, while 'Kathy Larone, added 16. "Everybody played well", says Coach Burgess. "I don't think we can single ,anyone out" as being , the outstanding player. "The: whole: team played a well disciplined, well controlled game." This is not the first WOSSA champion- ship to be won by; a Seaforth team. As for the future, the coach says, "1 don't think we need to look forward to next year right now. It's just a good feeling toend the season on a successful note." In what was probably the best weekend for Seaforth. ,teams: in a long time, the senior boys basketball team produced an upset victory Saturday to win the ',Regina Mundi Titan's tournament in London. This is the first tournament that a Seaforth Golden Bars team, has actually won in ten Years, although they've; gathered several. consolation championships. The tournament was an upset because to win it, the Golden Bears had to defeat the Central Elgin Titans (tom St. Thomas, For the past two. years, Central Elgin has won. the All -Ontario finals. Last year they beat Sefaorth at WOSSA, and went on to win thattourney. Seaforth *placed third behind Tillsonburg, Annadale. Before Saturday's game, both the team; and Coach Terry Johnston were not overly optimistic about what would occur. "i figured that we'd. be 'lucky if we stayed within 15 points' of tilem (Central Elgin)," says Johnston. The coach thinks that the team's strongest point during the gaine was Composure, " Basically, the guys. didn't get upset over anything. When they needed a good play, they got it. To get . to:. the finals, the Bears beat. Glencoe 87-49 and Dorchester 52-49. The score of the Central Elgin game was a close 75.68, with Seaforth's Nielsen brothers,. Johnny and Dennis. scoring, 27 and 23 respectively.. In past years; the Golden Bears has been a good team. This year they are winners. One of the reasons is that there are 19`' Bantams homps members on the team, this season. whereas. in previous; years itwas difficult to find ten. This improves practices greatly, as, it allows game situationsto be simulated, with full offensive and defensive lines on the floor at once. Several of this years members are first year players, with Tittle experience, They likely won't see much, if any, action this season, However, they willbe learning the plays. and the skills, and should form the nucleus: of the squad in years to come. Seaforth has the smallest high school in the area, and in fact one of the smallest in the province. However, despite' this, and DEFENCE TACTICS --Dennis Nielsen: tries to block a play by a fellow teamate during the senior boys' basketbarl team practice at SDHS on Tuesday night. (Expositor photo) the lack of any sort of pre -high school basketball" program, SDHS •has produced two winning teams recently. "Objectively " states Johnston," ;1'd like ' to see them ` (the Bears) : make the Huron -Perth playoffs, and that's --going. to be tough (because of strong teams from both:Stratfrod and Goderich). I'd like to see ahem in the WOSSA'.finals." Winning WOSSA is a. reasonable goal for the team, as both Annadale and Central: Elgin have moved up to the: AA' divisions,' while Seaforth .is 'A'. Last year Seaforth was::. third only to these awo teams. This year they won't be in .the 'competition. If the . Bears manage to. win -WOSSA, and it won't he easy, then they will go on to the provincial finals for the first time ever.'
