Hi,4k, Santa! How are you? Busy, of
Pallts..e* I Understand- It's that tuner Qf Year
again,
• You cover a lot of territory on December
24; and even with Rudolph to guide you,
rni sure it's easy to lose your way.
I admit I felt a little miffed when you
missed my place two years in a row. Last
year I didn't even bother writing to you.
Forgive me,Santa; my judgement was
hasty. I kow you didn't intentionally
overlook me, Since then, I've moved and
Ell enclose a map to help you find my new
abode.
Reeently I found a copy of the letter 1
wrote to •you two years ago. I made a
terrible mistake in that letter, asking for a
lot of little things like staples and paper
,table lamps and tables to set them
on, typewriter ribbons and paper and
-Wastebaskets-
EVen with Mrs. Claus and all the little
elves helping, a busy man like you doesn't
have time to gather all those little -things.
Forgive me, Santa; I was thoughtless.
This year I'm restricting my list to one
item. Santa, one-stop shopping will do it
for me this year, Just go down to your
nearest auto dealership and pick me out a
nice new car. I want the real thing, Santa,
not a toy.
The make, model and colour I'll leave up
to you. Surprise me!' I'm sure you're aware
'of the importance of miles per gallon.
There are a few options I'd like included
- power steering andbrakes, automatic
transmissions, rear -window defroster and
air conditioning. (It's hard to believe now,
but even I know a hot summer will follow
this cold winter.)
•Bucket seats with velour upholstery and
carpeted floor would be super. An AM/FM
•
radio and tape deck is a prerequisite. (A
few tapes would add a thoughtful touch.)
Don't forget the white walls;.
I don't have a chimney in my new
partment. You won't have to bother
ng your traditional entry. Just' thpark_
e car olltside the door. I'll leave the light
en.
Perhaps you'd like to take my old car as a
trade in. It's be a faithful machine; I feel
as though it's tittle fora change for me, bot
I'm sure you'd find the car would come in '
handy for you, in case you break a runner
on the sleigh or something.
If you want a trade-in, i'11 leave the keys,
under the mat. If not, I'll make another
deal with you. You can use my new car to'
make your deliveries on the 24th. Leave my
place til the last, wake me up and I'll drive
you home. Weather permitting, of course.
1 don't think you have to worry about
your gift being duplkated. I told my sister
and brother-in-law I wanted a car, but my
brother-in-law was engrossed in a cat food
commercial on tv at the time and my
sister's only comment was "fat chancel"
Even if I did receive two cars, 1 could sell
one to finance a trip to Hawaii, which was
my second choice for Christmas this year.
My sister made another "fat chance"
remark, and my brother-in-law suggested a
one-way ticket to somewhereelse.
I believe I mentioned the Hawaii trip to
you two years ago. I guess you forgot, but
that's okay. All 1 really want, this year is a
Please forgive me for my doubt and
impatience in recent yea. I know I can
count on you in 1979, Santa,Merry
Christmas! Sincerey yours,
Elaine
P. S, Don't forget a lull tank of gas!

Start shopping a year ahead
By Anne Drozd, CA
For a really thrifty
Christmas '79 you should
have started shopping
December 27, 1978, the
day greeting cards, wrap-

ations went on sale for a
fraction of the pre -Christ-
mas price. But don't

There is plenty more you
can do to save money and
energy shopping, for next
--Christmas.
Even summer clothing
sales are possible gift
sources; you may think it
strange, to give, cottons or
beachwear in December,
but such gifts will be
appreciated by anyone who
heads south each year for a
winter holiday..
Toys also go on sale from
tiine to time during the
year -- but beware of the

standard brand name toys
can 'be a very good buy --

Kitchener,
Rev, Horst mentioned that
Luther preached freedom of
religion. He preached from
the scripture.
He read Psalm 46 using
Jesus' words the Truth shall
make you free, The Jews had
always had freedont of relig-
ion under the Romans who
ruled them so hardly under-
stood Jesus as they had
always had freedom of relig-
ion with the Romans ruling
them. The words of Psalm 46
gave Luther courage to speak
out.
Jesus shows that God
loves us and if we have
faith, and He gave his only
begotten son as a ransom to
free us of sin and worry and
guilt. 'People thought God
had'forsaken them. Rev.
Horst told how the lilies of
the field and the birds of the
air are not forgotten. by God
who also cares for His people
whom He loves so we have
no need to worry but have

was hostess to over two,
hundred local guests. The
large number that attended,
was proof of the popularity of
this type of event. I enjoyed
the meal and 1 said it was like
an old Boys and Girls reunion
as I talked to so many that I
hadn't seen for, yes, years.,
Following the luncheon Rev.
James Vanslyke , called at
Kilbarchan and administered
Holy Communion to four of
the residents.

Caution .required with wood fires.
As energy costs continue to climb, many
people are rekindling an old flame—wood
• fires. With proper forest management.
wood can provide a cheap, clean, renew-
• able energy source.
But don't forget you're playing with fire.
An improperly installed or maintained
fireplace, stove ,or combination wood -oil
• unit is a fire hazard.
Use common sense and follow a few
• simple guidelines:
*Install only units that have been
certified for use with wood by the Canadian
Standards Association, or Underwriters'
laboratories of Canada. Combination
wood -gas units are not approved.
• *Stoves, including grates. should be in
good condition! Doors and dampers should
fit tightly so you can control the rale of
combustion.
•Hire an expert to make sure the flue
• pipe and chimney are- in good repair and
• can handle • the higher temperatures
prOduced by wood' fires.
*If you originally had a coal or
• wood -burning furnace in your home and
•• later converted to a gas or oil unit,
restoration should be relatively simple.
However, some chimneys are designed
specifically for oil or gas and may not be
adequate. •
• Masonry of U LC -certified, factory: -built
chimneys are safe for use with wood. But
masonry chimneys should havea fire clay
flue liner.
*Flammable materials should not be left
closer than two inches (five centimetres)
fromthe chimney. % Chimneys should •
extend at least three feet (90 centimetres)
above a flat roof and 'at least two feet (60
centimetres) higher than any part of a
• sloped roof within. ten feet {three metres)
horizontally of the chimney.
•lf flue pipes must pats through,
combustible walls; a heat -dispersing think.:
ble at least 18 inches (45 centimetre's) in
diameter should encircle the pipes.
• •COntact your insurance agent before
adding a new heating system. It may be
,Considered an additional risk' resulting in
higher premiailiS. Ifyou do not notify your
agent and a fire occurs, your insurance
may, not apply.
•A building permit will probably be
required. Check with your Municipality
about this before work begins. Because of '
.the additional fire .hazards, consider.
installing a smoke detector.
The Ministry of Consumer and Com.:
• mercial Relations has published an infor-
mation sheet, titled "Guide for Home-
owners: heating with. wood fuels," _that
covers installation, lighting and mainten-
ance of wood -fired equipment which is
• available from the Consumer Information
Centre at 555 Yonge Street, Toronto.,
Ontari0 M7A 2H6. It will help ensure that
, you winter is safe and comfortable.
