Sport alk
by. Paul Ellis:
Seaforth District High School has
produced another championship team.
Last 'Saturdayafternoon, the SDHS
senior boys volleyball team took top
honours at the . Mitchell -Invitational.
Thew'
came mea a about after the
team played eleven straight games in five
hours, without even a break for lunch. '
Seaforth started out strong by beating
Listowel District High's team. 3 games.
straight with scores of 15-6, 17=15 and
15.11 Listowel is usually one of the top •
teams, However, it apparently lacked,
several of its better players..
The next threegames for the • SDHS
squad were against Lord Dorchester.
Secondary,. School from Dorchester.
Seaforth managed a 15-12winin the first,.
only.: to be handed their first defeat of the
tourney in the . next game by a score of
15-10. In the last game of the : match,
Seaforth took an 11-1 lead. Dorchester
made a spectacular comeback to score 12
straight points and: take a one point lead.
Seaforth then regained control and won thc
game 15-12.
The third and; final match of the
round-robinseries for the local team was
against Mitchell. By . this time, all the
players were tired; and everyone started.
making mistakes on both teams. Mitchell
won 2 out of 3 of the games by scores, of
15-11, 10-15 and 15-8.
Seaforth's record of 6 wins and 3 losses
in the tournament was the best of the 4
teams involved. After a, much needed 15
minute break, Seaforth met Listowel in a
best of three championship final.
The first game was an easy 15-4 win for
Another top
SDHS team
Seaforth, as Listowel made., a variety of
mistkaes. The SDHS team then went on to
win the next game 15-11, giving them te
h
match and the:cahmpionship. '

The team's greatest asset to date seems to
be John; Cairns. He is the team leader both
on and off the court, by combining skill
with good spirit and enthusiasm.
Brothers' Johnny and Dennis Nielsen are
both very powerful splicers,- and can be.
relied on when ;the points are needed.
Murray; Drager. has a deceiving serve,
which often is difficult, if not impossible; to
'return: He is also the team's only left.
handed spiker, a rare commodity in high
school volleyball.
Robert Thompson's height and long
arras allow him to get up high, and reach
the ball or make a spikewhen other smaller
players would have missed. This mean,s he
can spike downward at a steep aiiigle,:,
scoring a good number of points. Darrell
Dietz does some ,Spiking,,, but, his speciality.,
is setting. The ball cannot be -spiked if it
isn't set properly.
Completing the roster for the, •team are
;Jim MiDonald,` Paul .Ellis and Peter
Martene. They are all first;year seniors 'and
should , prove to be good players with a bit
more experience.
Winning, the tournament in Mitchell is a.
good boost for team morale, especially
since SDHS volleyball, teams usually place
somewhere in the middle of the final
Huron -Perth standings. They'll be . the
team to keep an eye on as the season
progresses., .
