Dad's old undershirt or their

Grade 9 students, 4'Torpor-
ow is Grub Day, so wear
your old clothes to school.
We'll have the slave auction
at 10:00." That was fine; he
left us in suspense for the
„text 18 hours!
At 845 Thursday morning
the grade nine kids roamed
the halls the school
wearing old_ sweat shirts,
jeans "air-conditioned,"
shoes, hats and t -shirts. W,
went to first class as normal,
went back to home room at
10:00 as normal and listened
to the morning annetince-

We listened to each
announcement hoping that
Mr. Shaw had forgotten the .
slave auction. Of course he
hadn't,
"Will all of the grade nine
students please go dowri to
the cafeteria and everyone
else go to the auditorium.90,
he asked. Most of the •
responses from the grade
nine classet Were "Do we
hafta?" or "I'm not hungry!'
As we left our home rooms
we said our farewells to our
teachers and wrote .our wills!
If we weren't shaking, we'd
calm down the person next to
us, We sat down on the
chairs inthe cafeteria, prom-
ising each person that ent-

As we entered onto the
stage we nearly went
"crazy" when we saw alt Of
those pairs of eyes staring at
us. We nearly cried when
Jayne Baker started the
bidding.
"Fifty cents!" one, girl.
yelled, "One dollar, lees
hear one dollar fortwo strong
girls! Let's hear one dollar!"
Jayne yelled. " One dollar,"
someone else bid. "Do I hear
$1,50?" Jayne asked. "Two
dollars" the first girl yelled.
"Two fifty" another yelled.
"Do I hear $2.75?" ". .75
the girl yelled. $2.75 going
once, 52.75 going twice,.
sold!."
Slave day wasn't too bad at
all! All we had to do was
carry books, roll nickels
down the hall. propose. to:
teachers, wash cars and push
cars around the school. Init-
iation day was a lot worse. At
lunch time on Slave Day we
were given a piece of paper
with the list of things that we
were supposed to wear. On
Friday we appeared at school
in that outfit.
When. I was two, my mom
was thankful that she'd

That's right, diapers were
included on the fist oft -shirt,
bib, bonnet, 'bells or ribbons
pi your running shoes, carryabottle, doll, teddy bear.and
rattle and a sign that said
"Tin an itty-bittl, ;•;-r!"
As soon as we walked up
the sidewalk we were plast-
ered with flying eggs, shav-
ing cream and a mixture. of
onions and tomatoes. During
the day we were blessed with
a new kind of shampoo called
"molasses" and a new
conditioner called "vase'
line," Lucky for the business
world that these products
aren't on the market yet!
You've likely beard of.
Kangaroo Court but never
heard what goes on them. If
• you disobey your slave mast -
Cr or escape dancing around
the flagpole you will be sent
to Kangaroo Court or if
you're only in grade ten to
eleven and•you initiate some-
oneyoti too will be sent to
Kangaroo Court. At first in
Kangaroo Court the grade
nines. were divided into
teams. They then had to Pass

back. When they said "go"
they pilled off the blindfold
and pushed our faces into the

Initiation is one day no
grade nine student looks
forward. to but if 1 had to go
through with it again I
would!
