BY PATRICIA * There's, nothing more exciting .than standing up in front of hundreds of people to do the highlandfling, knowing that your family is. there tosupport you, says 12 year old Tracy McPher- son. Tracy is in her fifth year of doing the highland dance and hopes to continue on. Tracy's favorite dance is the sword dance. She says this dance isn't the easiest one but it .isn't too hard. Tracy says she is, lucky enough to have a family that has always supported her. Both of Tracy's brothers, Jeff and Greg, played the bag- pipes at one time. Greg still plays them and often accompanies Tracy when she ' :dances: in competitions. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh 'McPherson, also support Tracy to the highest extent. Her ' mom, Bernice, sews. most of the kilts and blouses •which Tracy wears in compe- tition. Tracy's dad drives the family to as far as, .Alma, Michigan, where Tracy and Greg have competed. Tracy also has: two .older sisters, Debbie and. Heather .who. have a special interest in her dancing. With right training from Lila. Storey of Seaforth, Bren r, da .Harriston of Godericha, A addrall.Stratford Ann 1'l n of * Terra Rowland of London, and few tips from her family,, Tracy has been a great succesgs. Tracy has won bet- sch9,g1;1worItt 'Sile e.0111.s to enjoy SeltooL-ag.dloveshare, work!' In the summer months,. Tracy spends much of her time biking, babysitting, ween fifteen and twenty aw- ards in the last five years, In the beginning, winning; a medal: or trophy was much more difficult for Tracy than it is now. This 'is because Tracy was much more ner- vous then, It would take a lot of coaxing and nerve to get a small seven year old to do the same dance she did for Mom in the family's kitchen, on a: strange stage in f>lont of hundreds of people, Inthe fall, Tracy will .be, returning to Seaforth Public School to Grade 7. Tracy spends a IM of timepractis- ing her highland fling but not too much to interfere with. Almost every week- end through the surnmer. months, Tracy competes in Highland Games. One question that was in my mind wh.en,1 was talking to Tracy was, "How did you get interested in high- land dancing?" "My family used to go to Highland dancing lessons. But that was the past; then 1 asked Tracy what she'd like to de in the future. Tracy said she could be a judge for the Highland Games or teach other girls the ' dance. She also said she hopes ' to; continue dancing for a few years more. although ' she doesn't know when she'll. quit. She only has a few more Swim team oreroterest or no team BY PATRICIA. RIMIER Unless more kids become interested in; the Seaforth swim team there may not be a Seaforth swim team. There aren't nearly., as many kids out to practise for the Seaforth swim team now as 'there 'were at the beginning of July: The first swim meet which was. held in Seaforth Was very successful as 40 kids from Seaforth :participated. "The number of kids par- ticipating is very important because you get points for participation." Anne Albert 'one of the lifeguards at the pool said, ".That is why it is so important for more kids to come out. You don't have to be a: fast swimmer, just being therewill help. The swim team practises.. at the Lion's Pool Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:30 until 5:30. The kids ;who join the swim. team pay a small fee of 53.00 to race in towns as far away as Tara near Port Elgin and Exeter. Sharon Wilson, one. of the approximately 15 kids left who still go • out to practise says. "It's a lot of fun. It's not as if it's work, work, work. In fact we had a game of water polo just the other day! Next Saturday there will be another swim meet in Exeter. If you are interested in joining the swim team and participating in Saturday's meet, come to practise to- night at 4:30.
