These things are .zilore im- portant than Which way the Odds it 'ends by Elaine 1'own.shend Org a n i zed ..Not me In my ongoing search, for the secret' tAi being organized, 1 tried the; advice of a wise philosopher, who said: "Make a list of all the chores you,; have to, do in a day or a week. Then, as you finish each task. .scratch it from the list. As the scratches increase and the jobs decrease, you'll gain a feeling of accomplishment. With your timetable thus organized. you'll find more time for relaxation." His intent was to list the, jobs in order of their importance rather than their enjoy^ ment and to do the most pressing tasks; first. But, wise philosopher that he was, I'm sure he made allowances for cheaters, like me. My agenda Went. like this: first, things 1 like to do second, tasks that are easy and. can be done in a hurry; third, longer and More complicated chores; fourth and ficial,, jobs i absolutely deplore. By doing the easy jobs first, 1 .quickly accumulated numerous scratehes. At first glance my list looked impressive, but 1 wasn't really fooling myself. I knew the few jobsthat remained wou id take more time and effort than all the smaller ones, combined, items, such as "scrub' kitchen floor" and "clean storeroom" went from one day's list to the next and .one week's list to the next, 1. could . close the storeroom door and forget it. but 1 couldn't avoid tromping on the kitchen floor: Finally I could stand the dirt no, longer.. Out came the mop, bucket and wax, and at the end of .the evening, t malicioµsly scratched one more onerous task from the list, Meanwhile the store- room door, stayed shut, One day my niece curie > to. visit. and 1 absent-mindedly sent her to the storeroom to get something. In a moment, her horrified, muffled voice floated out to me, "Blaine, this is awful!, Hew do you :find anything in here?" I didn't say a word, and 1 didn't pressure her in any way. For some reason, she decided to clean the room, and I didn't interfere. 1 stayed out of the way, interrrupting her only to check the Toads of garbage before she hauled them out to the, box, Occasion- ally I had to explain the difference between good junk and worthless junk. Otherwise no conflicts developed. When she finally finished and allowed me in, 1 thought I was in the wrong place, The oniy problem is she expects the room to look as good when she comes back as it. does now. Still amazed at my good fortune; i. stroked the last chore from the slip :of paper. Though my list didn't end the way the philosopher intended it to and I'm no more organized now than 1 was, three weeks ago, I gained a great . feeling . of satisfactio, n. when l chucked the scribbled list into the trash.
