Mary Thompson
Seaforth's other
discus star
BY PAUL ELLIS
Just when. Johnny Nielsen thought that
he had captured the spotlight in. track and
field in Seaforth,; alongcame another
athlete Who deserves to be noted. •
Mary Thompson of Seaforth District
High. School has proven that she also is
worthy of a tittle recognition. in throwing.
the discus, she has placed first in all of
Western Ontario in the mid8et, girls'
'competitions. Last Thursday, Mary won at
the Western Ontario Secondary :.School
Association (WOSSA) track meet in
London.
At WOSSA, Mary's . throw ' of 26. 71
metres was almost a full metre farther than.
The second place finisher's. She was.
competing against other girls from schools,
much, larger .than S.D.H.S., which makes
her performance even more outstanding,
Usually the best athletes are produced by
the large , schools which 'have.. better
training facilities.
To .get, to WOSSA, Mary first ,had to
make a good showing at the Huron -Perth
Conference finals a few weeks earlier. And
her first place finish there was about as
good as you can 8et..,
As well as discus , Mary also throws the
shotput. In Huron -Perth, she placed third
and at WOSSA she placed fifth. Unlike
Johnny, who also throws both the shot and
the discus. Mary prefers the discus. But
this hasn't stopped the two from working
together. Several times"a week, both can
be . seen out behind the . high school
practising.
"When Mr. (coach Terry) Johnston isn't
there to help," says Mary, "Johnny helps
me and; gives me some otips." When
Johnston is there, Mary considers his help
to be extremely valuable. "When I was in
grades sevenand eight, 1' was just throwing
with my arm. He really helped me a lot,
and taught me =to use my body."'•
Mary first started throwing the shot and
discus in grade 7, but she didn't do much
work on it this year until about the middle
of April. She has been doing quite a bit of •
practising, much of it at home. She throws
either the 4' kg shot or the discus in her
front yard, and gets her father to help by
measuring her distance,
Before Huron -Perth, Mary competed as
part of the school track team at meets in
London and, Exeter. She won first in the
discus at Exeter and second in the shotput
at Robarts School for, the Deaf in London.
Upcoming. for Mary is the. Regionals
meet in Tilisonburg this Saturday. If she
wins there" and coach Johnston thinks that
she will, Mary will be headed for"
O.F.S.S.A.' The placing at O.F:S.S:A.
determines how an athlete ranks in the
entire province, " '
"Potentially, she ; ,couldwin all of
Ontario. She has thrown over 30 m . in
practise, and she has' it' in her arm, if she
could just bring it out at the right time." "
says Johnston. "We wilt be very dis-
appointed is she doesn't place in the top
four.

I:.enjoyed a wholesome meal the other
day that virtually .didn't cost me a cent. It
consisted of a few smelt gleaned, from the
poor run we had in this, area served up with
a steaming heap of marsh marigold greens
and a bowi of watercress for a salad. The
smelt were the hardest to pet, but the
greens only, took a few minutes to collect.
With just .a little knowledge, anyone can.
collect enough greens to feed a family in
just a, few minetes during a. Sunday walk.
One of the most important aspects of
enjoying wild greensis the proper prepar-
ation of them for the table, There are also a
few greens that must be cooked with one or
more changes of water (such as marsh.
marigold) in order to remove any un-
desirable properties which might be prey
ent. A host of books have appeared on the
market dealing with the preparation of wild
foods, but the one that 1 find myself
referring to the most is ,"A Taste of the
Wild," by Blanche'Pownall Garrett.
I'm often asked what plants are available
to eat this :time of year and am forced ,,to
-reply that spring has to he mother nature's:
second most bountiful time. Thetender
young leaves of many plants make excel-
lent greens, and .there is a whole list of.
shoots that .can 'be• used as asparagus
substitutes, Salads are free: for the picking
and wild onions andleeksare at their hest
for seasoning. Even mushrooms in the
form, of morns are available for an
interesting side dish, Why don't you check.
out your local bookstore for a wild plant
identification guide to take it along the next
time the mild weather beckons you totake
a walk in the country,
'11 mosquitos and' black flies bother you,
take hear`. There is an insect repellent that
really works. 1 tried "Muskol" for the first
time last falland was surprised at its
effectiveness. The manufacturers claim it
. will last up to 8 hours, and from the trial
runs I've given it so far; I'm, prepared to
believe them. Now that the ";bugs" are
with us again, I'll be able to test it to its full
't
:extent. 'you'll have to search to find it;
however. as a lot of stores don't carry it.
It's expensive, (probably the reason it's not
on every shelf) costing about $4.00 for a 2
oz. bottle, but it looks like it's goingitahe
worth every cent.

The gust, control issue israising, its ugly
head again. I've just received a copy of a
letter that brings back all the old fears. The
letter, which is dated January 22, 1979,
and is printed on what .apears to be the
Chief of Police's letterhead from the
Ottawa Police is a confidential memory
andum of the Firearms Control Unit;
Administrative Personnel only.
The memorandum refers to the paper
known as. the "Police Function" dealing
with public disarmament. What it says in
effect is that due to all the publicity that.
gun control issues have been receiving,
enforcing agencies are requested to sus-
pend all activities for the time being. It.
goes on to say that implementation: will be
resumedaccording to a revised schedule
and supplemented by more Orders in
Council after the general': election takes,
place. In the meantime, enforcement
agencies are not to take any action "which.
-may tend *to alarm the lar8e number of
civilian firearm owners," The memoran
dual appears to be signed, by Thomas E.
Welsh, Ottawa. Chief of Police.
As is always the case --in . official;
confidential: documents, the authenticity of
this memo'. is difficult to determine, If it is
'false, the Ottawa Police would naturally
deny it,: bat on the other hand, if itis
authentic', the nature of the content would
demand that it be automatically denied
anyway. If it's true, .we may be in;for a big,
surprise in the near future. The only way
we'll be able to determine the truth will be
"after the fact" but then it'll be too late.
You may not personally support hunting.
and associated activities, but as a true;,
Canadian you ,should support the basic
concept of freedom that this country is so .:
famous for.
