We had our French lunch, in an American city.. Charlotte Amalie on St, Thomas in, the Virgin islands. In a high ceilinged. plaster and brick restored building off an alley downtown, the restaurant was called L`Esgargot, cool, restful land serving the best cold potato soup I've ever tasted. The restaurant was., next to snorkeling and swimming ata white sand beach all =riling, the highlight of our day in; St. Thomas. 'While the island, (especially the beaches) is beautiful, downtown Charlotte Amalie is like a big city mall the Saturday before Christmas, Harried, shoppers, looking for bargains,' were from the nine different cruiseshipsin harbour at the duty free port. '41 try never to go downtown °i, the man at the scuba. 'equipment shop told us proudly when we asked for directions. His attitude seemed shared by most of the newer residents of the US territory. They`.tte people who have taken big wage ` cuts in exchange for a warm :climate and relaxing lifestyle in a move to the V.I. from continental U.S. . A PARADISE? St. Thomas, downtown excluded, looks like ' a •paradise:..English spoken, American money and customs, easy..but living:. costs are high, there's always a shortage of water and jobs. Still, our snorkeling guide, a V I. resident for 13 weeks who'd left an executive job in the northern U.S., hadno regrets at ail. • Although it's:411 South America, Caracas, Venezuela shared North American hustle and bustle with St. Thomas. Plaza Bolivar, Helpful people gave us directions and got us on the right bus to get back to the ship but, Caracas wasn't a big hit with our gang. Picture downtown Toronto on a hot Sunday in July and you're close: Then too the poverty in oil rich Venezuela is hard to take. How do you 'corrie"to'terms with long lines of big, shiny air conditioned cars in traffic jams on the way to the beach which pass hillsides frill of 'houses that are almost shacks and women doing the wash at streams beside the expressway? . The tiny corner of Venezuela we saw looked poorer than any of the .islands visited. Maybe because we stopped there first when he whole trip;. was- ,new: to -us. metnoaries of Aruba are a little dim. We' flew into the Dutch island's capital city, Oranjestad the Sunday. before Lent, and, ydu guessed it, ran into Carnival. The narrow main streets of the city were filled With the 'longest parade 1 ve ever seen. Hardly anybody was . watchingg.. everybody', from kids to old people„ was tri it. It moved really slowly, hardly at n11 in the hot sun. Everybody wore long, heavy elaborate costumes and ` when things stopped, everybody including tourists, ;lanced to swinging Caribbean music. Beer. punch, tum and wine were ttowing and` everybody si'as really happy.' We didn't ' havetime to get to any of the desert -like is?anit s long beaches and thestores were all closed for the parade but the giant party was a good way to start our cruise. 1 would have hated to be around on Monday though when everyone woke ttp nursing hangovers.
