In London, day care services are so in
demand that many parents enrol their child
as soon as ,they learn they're expecting a
baby.
But while• day care -centres are :a fact of

new phenomenon in Huron County.. The,

The staff at the centre includes .Ms,

the Kippen area and Debbie Denomme'oi
Zurich, June. Tompkins of Vanastra who
prepares the childrens' meals and
part-time employee, Virgina. , Gill. of
Vanastra.
The centre is open year roundexcept for
statutory holidays. Since many ' of the
parents work at Bayfield Boats in Vanastra,
at Huronview or at the Benedix plant in
Hensall, the centre is open from 6:30 a.m.
so the children can be dropped off before
their parents go in for the early shift,
Ms. McEwing said fees for the day care
centre, 56 for a full day, are deductibles
from a parent's income tax. Parents can
now claim up to 51,000 per child on their
income tax returns.
The aim of the school, according to the
brochure prepared for parents, . "is to
,provide pre-school children with a relaxed,
'cheerful atmosphere."
The child learns to get along with both
children of his own age and with adults,
outside those in his own home.
In order to help: children fee secure, the
daily routine at the school follows a set
Pattern. When children arrive, they spend
a fewminutes playing with toys or 'games
before dividing up into the junior and
senior classes.
' Ms. McEwing said although the children
aren't formally taught the 'skills they'll
learn at the kindergarten level, their craft
program does introduce them to a number
of skills; Per.' example, Ms. 'lzhomgon"
encourages her senior class of four and v
year oldl to write their own names; tie
learn to count since many of the crafts ar
based en number concepts and children:
develop co-ordination byusing, scissors,

Each week, the teachers also choose a• '
theme to build the week's activities --
around., This week,' `children are learning
about life on the farm and next week they'll
.visit an area farmer:
Two weeks ago, students centered their
crafts around the Valentine theme, and
their work was used to decorate the centre
