% cup tomato paste
1 tsp. salt

1 tbsp. ggoessh thyme or 1 tsp. dried
% lb. mudhrooms, cut
2 carrots, cut in -slices
1 zucchini, cut in slices
34 cup zed and green pepper slivers
In heavy ovenproof pot or dutch oven. heat
011. Cook garlic and onions until softened. but
not browned, remove front pan and set aside.
Add beef to o1 remaining m pan, cook until
browned on all sides. Add stock. tomato
d . salt and pepper, bay leaf and thyme.
Cover and bake m 325° oven for 1% to 2
hours, dr until beef is tender. prefer,
simmer over low heat on top stove r same

German Christmas food
• in Germany, children anticipate Christ-
mas by righting the candies on the Advent
wreath and by opening one flap each day on
Advent calendars to reveal a Christmas
picture. Green fir and spruce boughs
decorate mirrors and walls.
One room in the Getman household
remains locked all Advent as a room for the
Christ child to rest in. On Christmas Eve, the
children go fora walk tensing carols otattend
church and they return to ■ darkened house.
They enter and wait for the bell to rind then
the locked room is opened- The Christmas
tree ablaze with candles and glittering
decorations Lights up the house. a gift from
the Christ child
Presents are stacked in individual heaps

and marzipan candies. The apples, nuts and
almonds are traditional German Christmas
