I remein er wen rho matin tips that MY** used to tnakc to my grandparents home cit of Toronto On Christmas Eve. .ltiavellingto Grandma's b6use on Christ= Dues was Always exciting. We would pack the presents, luggage, food and any other goodies that we had to take with us. Into the cat and we would be on our way. Dad would always drive, with Mom beside him, the dog at her feet and the three of us kids in the back seat. Often we would sing Christmas carols in the car or play games on the way to my uncle's home in Cambridge. There, we would enjoy Christmas dinner, exchange gifts and be on our way to Grandma's Mouse once more. Travelling along the 401 we would listen anxiously to the Chrishnas Eve report of a UFO circling throughout Ontario driven by reindeer. The car radio provided us with - plenty of Christmas music and Christmas cheer. Finally, once we had arrived at Grandma's house, we visited with our cousins and quickly were tucked into bed before Santa Claus made his visit' Our Christmases were the same as most people's but we really did count 013 the highways being dear; and safe and the weather being good. Our family always enjoyed the safe trip to my grandparent's home. Unfortunately, nine years ago our annual Christmas Eve trip was not as safe as the other ones we had remembered. On the 401 in 1974 there was an awful accident in which two. lives could have easily beat taken. baa pair fatally wain not hat' +ed in lila pa t t,- ae wiitnosacd: the me very! muclf, involved. Althoa no lives .wAden aken that tight, bothdrivers Involved were lnjtred and went through extensive, treatment over that Christmas holiday. The driver of t w . aline. travelling on her one car was a Y why home for Christmas. The other driver had been ata Christmas party earlier where he enjoyed too much Christmas cheer. He was travelling east in the westbound in the eastbound lane. Other cars managed to dodge this hazard, but the young nurse was pot as fortunate. That' terrible accident affected a lot of lives that Christmas. Since then, our family . has always travelled to -my grandparents home on Christmas Day in the daylight. We feel much safer then. It is really too bad, but because some people choose to drink on Christmas Eve and then drive, they endanger other people's lives. I am not against enjoying a drink with relatives or friends at Chnshnas, or any other time for that matte. However, people must be able to control themselves when they are drinking and nit drink over their limit If one person was to drink too much on Christmas Eve and then attempt to drive home half an hour later, he could endanger the lives of hundreds of others and himself once he putt the key in the ignition. This is an awful hazard at any time of year but at Christmas it • is especially wrong to drive on the highways if you have been drinking or if you are drunk. You see, 1 have an inside line with Santa, and I give him my personal reports every year - Unfortunately, this year as all years, there are those very few people who just can't help but be bad..ln order to save these people embarrassment, which I may say isnot my usual policy, I am withholding names. Usually they don't get caught. but this year Santa had The Wall looking out for him, and the Wall knows all, as many people tend to forget from time to time. Well kids, as my Christmas gift to you, 1 would just like to wish everyone a very safe hopda! aholidand a very happy New Year! (not too See you alt next year!! The Wall P.S. Sure, it's awful . cold, makes a mess of Mom's nice, clean Boors, and tends too South once in a while for the Winter, but don't we all? Would you really trade W of those snowball fights, weekend snowmen, tobo$anniag and rce- skating parties for Florida? Who am 1 kidding, of course you would!! It must be great to sit in the sun on a beach in Fituida, sipping on a glass of milk, and munching on chocolate -chip cookies, laurtisg at your friends back home in Sea ortli, who are trying to shovel their way uptown! . But hey, you don't have to go all the -way to Florida for that!! Grand Bend beach is open all year round, and I'll bet the crowds aren't as bad there as in Florida for swimming- For some reason, December seems to be a bad month in Ontario for swimmers--beach-bums anyway. If the hassles of pre -Christmas life are getting you down, don't despair; in five days' the night -mare will be over. In four short days, my Dad, who camps out under the Christmas tree the day after it goes up, will once again come back to the world of normal human beings. Christmas does weird 'things to people, espedally parents. This year I totally banned the use of mistletoe in our home, because of overuse last year.
