GILBERT AND GRACE SMITH
Though they lived through the ' Dirty
30's", Gilbert and Grace Smith wouldn't
have missed the last 50 years of marriage for
anything - starting as a young couple today
would be too difficult.
' "We, hear a lot of talk today about the
depression in the 30'9 but we didn't realize
we were living in such hard times because
nearly everyone was in the same boat. No one
'had much money and all we wanted to do was
make a living and stay out of debt," says
Grace. "We're thankful we lived in the day
and age we did because I don't think we could
cope with today's condltlons any better than
our young people are.'
Married at the McKillop manse on Dec. 2,
1983 , the ,Smiths raised two daughters,
Lorraine and Eileen, and farmed on the
family farm where Gilbert was born.
Though life on the farm involved a lot of
hard work, it also meant many good times.
"Young people have missed the fun of
travelling in the winter by horse and cutter or
sleigh. Bumping into pitch holes was great.
The sleigh was much more relaxing than
travelling in this motorized age," says Grace.
After the' chores of making cream and
butter, working in the vegetable garden and
the fields, caring for the livestock, cooking,
baking, cleaning and cutting wood in the
bush, entertainment was inexpensive and as
close as the nearest neighbor.
"We had house parties where we danced
and played cards in the winter time. I can still
smell the coffee and the salmon sand-
wiches," she says. "We never travelled very

to go to the Bayfield Pavilion when it was
opened for the season. The music sounded
just like Guy Lombardo and l loved to dance,"
says Grace.

missed last 50 years
far from home because baby_sitters for our
girls were unknown. And, we couldn't take
the cows with us.
One of the biggest changes the Smiths see
today is in the economy especially the price of
groceries. A salary of S3 a week covered most
expenses when the Smiths were first
married.
"Of course, we are buying things today
that we never heard of in our day. Electricity
has spoiled us; the only electrical appliance
we don't have is an electric rolling pin. 1 wore
out my first wedding rings after using the
wash board for 25 years,' she says.
Another change that bothers Mrs. Smith is
the trend away from the church.
"We were brought up tp go to church every
Sunday and we couldn't even whistle or pkk
up scissors on Sunday. 1 feel today our
priorities are mixed up. The church isn't lust
a place for matching, hatching and dispatch -
the threat of nuclear war makes her scared
for the future of her six grandchildren.''
"I'm
glad 1 didn't have that worry on my mind
when 1 was young;" she says.
The Smiths celebrated their 50th anniver-
sary with friends and relatives at an afternoon
tea on Saturday at the . Cavan Church,
Winthrop.
"We 'have many memories of the good
times we shared together with family and
friends and we hope it will continue to be that
way," she says.
Huronview residents enjoy
concert by Dashwood band
The Seaforth Dashwood Community Band
under the director Harry Hoffman arranged
a Christmas concert at the auditorium of
Huronview for the enjoyment of residents
and friends.
The band played a series of rousing
numbers much to the tempo of which they
are famous.
The B II Ringers of Wingham directed by
Mr. Gerd tt put on their own program
of carols with their bells. Mrs. Henderson of
Wingham favored with Silent Night accomp-
anied by Mrs. Henderson the staff pianist.
A very technical violin solo was then given
by Carol Ann McQuaid with Mrs. McQuaid
at the piano. A dance number as an encore
waswell received. Several carols were then
finally, sung by the audience with band
accompaniment. ,

Volunteers are
essential for CNIB
Since working with the visually handicap-
ped is often on a one to one basis, volunteers
pay an important part in the daily activity of
the CNIB. At present there are over 47;000
volunteers active in the organization, but
there is always room for one more.
