Junior ringette
team improves
Seaforth Junior Ringette has just
completed its third week of league play and
though it got off to a rough start all players
have improved steadily and have narrowed
the scores considerably with the help of
parent drivers the team has traveled to
Brussels, Listowel, Mount • Forest and to
Wingham where the Seaforth "team played
their best game to date. 'Seaforth has also
hosted Brussels, Listowel and Wingham and
once again the Seaforth squad played
extremely well.
Pam Campbell is the junior team's leading
scorer with five goals while Lori Henderson
and Angie Roth have also pocketed one
apiece. Though they 'have yet to' score
themselves Susan Rowcliffe and Sara Teall
have added greatly to Seaforth's offense,.
• It is not possible for a defenseman to score
but Tammy Kennedy and Tawnya Taylor
have prevented many goats with their
excellent play. In net both Tracey Fortune
and Lisa Henderson, a rookie, have kept
Seaforth in the game with their outstanding
performances.

Umpire or ,referee bashing is a sport
inset' fans and players participate in.
Insults to those people who try to make
sate everyone plays by the rules range
tram offering a pair of glasses to shouting
more abusive and foul language. Tennis
star John •McEnroe has become Utmost
More proficient at umpire -bashing -than he
is at tennis. After asking a net judge "How
many imaginary lets do you intend to call
you fat turd?", he was fined 51500. He also
contributed to the one year probation of the.
umpire, who in exasperation, compared
McEnroe to a hardened criminal while
speaking with reporters.
Worse than the verbal taunts is the
physical abuse officials sometimes endure
when players and coaches lose their
tempers. Fines of $3000 each have gone to
two National Basketball Association coach-
es, one who was suspended for verbal
abuse and physical contact with a referee.
The other verbally abused and threw water
at an official.
Professional officials may be well paid
for their abuse but we can't say the same
about those who officiate for Seaforth
sports. And, some people who have worked
as referees in town say they wouldn't do it
again. "I've had enough. I'm just going to
play hockey, shut my mouth and enjoy the
sport from now on"'
says Bill Price, who
refereed in Seaforth for about Six years.
"You don't like, to get mad at your own
neighbors but I couldn't believe how some
people treated me."
Though it's more expensive to hire
alt -of -town refs. Seaforth has a hard time
M4 In{t •People in town t9 referee local
games, taws Cacolanne Dolg. "It's hard to
referee people you know because the abuse
is then on a personal level. Refs are
important and we need them but not
enough people respect them," Abe says.
Players, .spectators and coaches who
debate every call, Undermine the pfiicialtsr
confidence , and therefore 'get worse . ref,,
ereeing. And, when children hear adults
yelling at the' refs, they follow suit as they
get older. "We have to start educating
people that unless we get computers to ref,
referees are human and make mistakes.
It's hard work being a ref; you have to
think quickly and make a stand whether
you're right or wrong", says Ms. Doi4.
Playing and officiating is always easter
from the stands. "A cure for loud mouths
is putting a striped sweater on them and
letting them try it," she says.
a
Even though a game 'cannot be played
without officials, people change their
personalities in a game situation and get
mouthier, says one ringette referee.
And, the hardest pill to swallow is abuse
*hen the ref is only officiating as a favor.
"People beg refs to tome to games and
then treat them as if they're idiots." -says
another. But, what's the point of abusing
referees? Their calls don't change no
matter how many insults they receive.
And, in Seaforth, their decisions don't
determine million dollar games. Maybe the ,
referees have a solution. Next time, you feel
an insult forming on your lips. get into the
game and put your whistle where your
mouth is.

The Seaforth girls played a pretty steady
game in spite of the score. After the {dame the .
Goderich coach admitted that Seaforth was
their toughest competition yet as they have
had some runaway wins.
Scorers for Seaforth were Denise Morey
with four goals. Jan Vandenberk and Lisa
O'Dwyer each with one.
It was an exciting game. The next home
