Moto -crops involves
rider and parents
You're roasting in the
sun; moto-crogs bikes ap-
proach you sounding like a
swarm of mosquitos and race
by leafing you in a cloud of
dust.
But, though that's her
descri, tion of life as a Moto-
cross Mom, Linda Sipes, of
Kitchener praises the sport as
one in which the whole family
can get involved.
Moto -cross racing as a
family sport was one of the
theme's of the parents' semi-
nar at Hully Gully near Varna
on the weekend.
"Parents and childrt1 can
work together at keeping the
bike in good running order,"
says Wayne Dickens, of Hully
Gully. "You can teach a child
that he must care for some-
thing that he owns."
Parents were also told to
keep their children in good
physical condition if they are
racing.
"After a kid runs a 10 or lS
minute mote, he's sweating
like a trooper. A lot of people
don't realize the exertion that
goes into it," he says.
Advice to help parents deal
with the maintenance of the
bike was given to the approx-
imately 10 parents at the
seminar.
"You have to be prepared
to do it if you expect your bike
to run week from week," he
says.
Cleaning the dust and dirt
from all parts of the bike such
as the brake shoes and the
bearings will help prolong the
life of bike parts. Motor
mounts should be checked
after every race to make sure
they are tight; if not, the
motor could shift causing the
chain to fall off or even the
motor to fall out. Cables
should be kept well lubricated
so that the clutch is loose.
Also, the kick stand should be
removed so that it doesn't
come down during a race and
catapult the driver over the
handle bars.
"Everything on the bike is
made of aluminum or magne-
sium so it doesn't take a lot of
punishment. You can save
yourself a lot of money if you
can do maintenance your-
self," Mr. Dickens says.
Motocross is an expensive
sport, agrees Mrs. Sipes.
With two sons involved and a
third showing an interest in
mote -cross, she and her hus-
band are spending literally
thousands of dollars on the
sport.
To buy a moto-cross bike,
the protective gear including
a helmet, gloves, boots and
padding, and a membership
-to race at Hully Gully, she
figures it costs a minimum of
S1300 for a beginner. And,
that's not including the costs
involved in travelling to the
races;
1 tell my sons that if they
canpay for the gas money to
get to the races, we'll take
them," she says. The Sipes
spend weekends in the sum-
mer camping at Bayfield
although races are held
across the country.
While the parents were
learning about maintenance
tips, their children were at-
tending "school" with two
members of the national
moto-cross racing team. They
learned basic riding skills,
warm-ups to do before each
race, and maintenance tips as
well.

Track prepared for nationals
With the Labatt's National
Senior Motocross Champion-
ships one month away, Hully
Gully's track preparation ef-
fortsre going full speed
ahead.Truckload upon truck-
load of sand has been added
to the clay base at the track to
assure the best possible con-
ditions for the Nationals on
July 9 and 10.
During the Junior Nation-
als, last year, Yvonne Du
Hamel, a former top Cana-
dian rider, commented that
Hully Gully's track was "the
nicest I have seen...I was
surprised." - This
year, the track will be even
better. When a comment like
that is made by one of
Canada's most famous veter-
an motocross racers, it's
difficult to see what else can
be done, but with Hully
Gully's extensive Motocross
experience they are always
striving to make - the sport
better for riders and specta-
tors alike.
Approximately 30 horses
qualified at Clinton before a
good crowd of interested
spectators on Sunday after-
noon.
Among the drivers partici-
pating were two young
women, Judi Andrews, al-
ready a qualified driver, and
Tammy Larsen of Goderich,
who had another good quali-
fying drive.
Clinton Raceway will re-
open for the 1983 season on
Sunday, June 19 with post
time at 1:30 p.m. Qualifying
races will go at 12:30 p.m.
