In 1931. 'Pearl McNichol broke'her foot
while at the Mitchell racetrack. But luckily
for her, Fred Harburn, :a boy who grew up
nearby in Cromarty, was there to help.
"She coaxed me to take her home and
that was the end of it:" jokes Fred Harburn.
Fred and Pearl celebrated their SOth
wedding anniversary on Saturday.
The two grew up in the same area and saw
each other often as children because their
families were friends. After the accident at
the racetrack, a romance began and they
were married in 1933.
They moved/ to, RR2 Staffa in 1940 where
Fred began 'a' wheat spreading ' business
which he continued for 30 years. Pearl used
to help drive the Spray truck as well as
takkng in boarders from Hydro and the
gravel gangs.

had tough times and lots ofood times but
everything can't be sugar. Things come up
that you have to cope with," she says.
And. the Harburns know about, coping.
Of their four sons, two have died and Pearl
has suffered from two strokes,.one 20 yehrs
ago and one only two years ago.
"1'm lucky really," she says. "Most
people are paralysed or can't speak." Pearl
has some difficulty getting around and uses
a cane. l,red helps out by •working around
