More money for recreation
Brussels council has ap-
proved a 10 per cent de-
crease on the 1983 budget
from the 1982 mill rate.
Despite thecutback, taxes
will rise approximately four
per cent because of increas-
es in education levies.
"Isn't that nice?" council-
lor Betty Graber said glanc-
ing at the proposed budget,
noticing 1983 expenditures
were down approximately
$5,000.
"We're cutting everything
down and cutting ourselves
right out of business," said
Gord Workman. "We're
making ourselves poor."
"The schools don't care
how much they put the taxes
up", said reeve Cal Krauter.
Lower expenditures re-
sulted because the "one-shot
deals" of 1982 were not
included on the new budget,
said clerk Bill King. "Last
year our mill rate really
Jumped (35 per cent). Now
""we're back down to a normal'
level with a 10 ver cent cut."
Drath-
Parks and recreation was
budgeted $1,000. "We have
to have more money for
recreation," said Mr. Work-
man.
A $2,200 expenditure for a
porta-pump and tank was cut
from the fire budget.
There's no problem strok-
ing it off," said councillor
Jerry Wheeler. "We're set-
up for town fires. The
equipment the department
has is split up between the
two trucks as good as can be
expected with what they
have."
Council approved transfer-
ring the $2,200 to the re-
creation department. Any-
thing is better than a kick in
the butt with a hard boot,"
said Mr. Workman. "The
arena is in the black. The
revenue is good and people
are attending. We're not
hurting yet, but there is
competition from the new
facility in Seaforth."
&'The $3,200 is mote rea-
listic," Mrs. Graber said.
"1 would like to see parks
and recreation receive $5,000
each year," said Mr. Wheel-
er. 'People are working
hard. It would be a cushion.
It's a good spot to put it."
"I say we give when it's
needed," said the reeve.
"1 say we give, then we've
got it," replied Mr. Wheeler.
"If you have money set
aside that normally would
not be used, people tend to
get carried away in their
expenditures," Reeve Krau-
ter said.
"1 don't think we're far
behind. There have been
times when the village has
given to recreation and no-

body else has," said council-
lor Workman.
The Huron 'County school
board levy will increase
$12,789 from the 1982 total of
$118,135, an 11 per cent
increase.
Vehement in his stand
against school board increas-
es, councillor Workman said,
"we sit here and say we have
to take it. Somewhere along
the line we should be
heard."
A Brussels resident with a
$3,000 property .assessment,
would have paid $619.26 in
taxes in 1982. The four per
cent increase means an
additional $28.22.
